What is the best way to tell when the thermostat is open? I see this alot in reference to flushing with muffs or winterizing using muffs.

If you can feel the top part of the thermo housing gettin hot that means the thermo is open and allowing water to circualte through the block...also the big hose from the thermo housing to the circulation pump on the front of the engine will get hot as well...when these parts are cool that's a sign the thermo is still closed...the dash gauge should agree with the temp of these parts...cool when they are cool and read normal temps (140-160 depending on which 'stat it has) when they are hot...
