Hello, All! Getting ready for another season with the boat. This year, I'm doing the packing for the first time. Very tight quarters and I'm a big guy. Do you think that removing the back deck would help much? It doesn't look too difficult to get off.

Thanks,

Doug

As in shaft packing? Hmm. Do you have a genny? If yes, I'd say yes, if not, maybe no.
I pulled my rear deck when I changed genny's. I'm also a big guy. It wasn't too difficult... you'll have to remove the side steps tho, to lift the deck out, as well as the rear seating, obviously.

In your boat, it probably would make it easier, but removing the deck won't be that easy either. Might be better to get someone who'll fit in there to do it...

Thanks, Guys - Yes, it is shaft packing I'm attempting. I do have a generator so it is really crowded in there. I supposed using my mechanic who is smarter and thinner would be a good idea, but, would removing the deck help his as well? I was thinking about resurfacing the deck and hatches as well. Other than removing obstructions (steps and seats), is there anything else I should worry about?

Nope, I don't think there's more to worry about. Be warned...that deck is fairly hefty! Have some help, and/or strap it to a fork-lift when trying to lift it out. Or many friends...

Thank you...That sounds like a good idea. It's in a barn where my radar arch is only 5 inches from the support beams of the roof. I could easily put a pulley/hoist on a beam over the back deck to lift it up. Is this something that is like 300lbs or 1000?

Nah, it's 300-400ish. Part of the problem is it's size and manageability. It's large...

Makes sense. Will have all the access doors off, as well. I think a simple hoist with a few friends will do it. Thanks!

I don't have a carver but I was curious. Are you talking about a large hatch or the cockpit deck. The deck on most boats are major structual components of the boat...if the deck is molded into the hull.

The deck is in the cockpit area, over the engines, generator, etc... There are some access hatches, but, it is really cramped trying to work there. There are screws that hold the deck on top of the supports. My plan was to hoist it off, after removing the access doors. That way, I can probably get to everything.

if you take it up it would be a good time to doo lots of other work.

You're right. Other than then shaft packing, I'm going to move a bilge pump, run wiring for interior lights and a few other accessories as well a rear nav light. I'll probably take the chance to repaint the deck and replace the weather stripping.

Probably some hoses, clamps and rust that need attention. What about risers??

Wow...haven't really thought that far ahead. Could use plugs, etc... I'm sure. This is probably the way to go.

Doug...Keep in mind that unless the deck has been off already, there is a double sided adhesive tape that Carver put down to seal the joint. It may be a little hard to pull up. Just make sure you have all the screws out...even look under the cabinet behind the helm seat. And unless your boat is from a saltwater area, or was drastically neglected, there shouldn't be much or any rust on the engines or in the compartment.
