We went up to Newburgh today, called ahead to Torches for a table for 12. They said OK. We got there, the place was empty, but they told us we couldn't eat outside (something about a fire hazard) and wanted to put us in the back of the indoor dining room. I guess they don't need the money a large party would spend.

We walked out and went to the River Grill, they said, sure, we can set you up right away. The gave us a table outside, the food was great and the service impeccable.

Torches has lost my business.
 
Mike I am not surprised. We used to enjoy going there but they got too big. The staff is more about setting it up for their convenience than making sure the party is happy.
So we go to all of the other establishments and we have been very pleased with their service and products. Akasaka the sushi place right there is quite good also.

But hey, it all worked out right?

By the way did you consider Poughkeepsie at all? They have the docks in now also.
 
Hogan seems that you are not having good luck dining out these days. A party of 12 should not have been a big deal however was there concern that a table that long would block the stairs and impair the access of a quick unobstructed exit? If so I understand and they did the right thing however they should have told you when you called ahead. I like Torches but I think they are a little pricey for what they are. I have never been there with such a large party and I will think twice about trying that.
I'm glad your back up plan turned out well. Not a lot of time left in the season to waste with bad experiences.
 
Dave I'm thinking Torches has plenty of table space outside to handle that size. We had a large party stuffed inside by the kitchen door once also.

The problem is they can't block the flow from the exit doors inside to the stairs leading away from the building. If this isn't the reason I don't see any excuses.
 
If that was the reason I would have expected an accomodating facility would explain that situation, and offered an alternative.
 
Dave, they had over 20 empty tables outside - if they don't block the stairs, why would it be a problem. The staff just didn't care.

It turned out fine, the River Grill was much better anyway.

I guess Torches didn't need the $500 in business - and didn't care that they would get bad publicity.
 
We were up there Sat night. Place was busy, so we walked down to the brick oven pizza joint. Lots of options in Newburgh. Pizza was great too.

Met a fellow 400ss owner at the dock later that night. He had a bunch of pimp lights on this boat. Not quite as pimpin' as Starry Night, but close. I got some good ideas from him. That alone was worth the trip.
