One of our favorite Delta Frankensteins er, imported species is back. I took a picture of toxic blue-green algae (a.k.a. green cornflakes) off the back of the boat at Spindrift Marina on Saturday. When I see it here it is usually all over the Central Delta.

What you see in this cell phone photo is not a dangerous concentration and is in all probability harmless. The stuff is floating near the top of the water and about fifteen feet away. The largest pieces are maybe 1 1/2" across. Before I knew what it was, I used to swim in water that contained maybe 100 times this much algae and never noticed any problem.

We had a post about the green cornflakes on this forum last September. Then the highest concentrations were found just downstream of Sherman Island. San Joaquin County Health Department posted some confusing warning signs at Mildred Island.

Thanks for the heads up Yzer! We're heading up to Locke Slough this weekend and hopefully there isn't a high concentration up there.

Looks like Lucky charms cereal floating in green beer on St Patty's day

LOL, gnarly!

I just returned from my boat last night. None of this stuff is around Franks Tract/Bethel Island yet. I also didn't notice any when I was over at Tower Park, but I wasn't keep a lookout for it either.......

It wasn't any worse this weekend than last. I'll probably run into a lot of it when we go out on vacation later in the month. This stuff tends to peak in September.
