Why not ask the marina to place two additional pilings on your starboard side?
Once the boat is between the pilings, you have all the time you need to tie up.

That's actually a very good idea!! Even if you have to pay for it.

Certainly a good idea if I was dealing with reasonable people but I'd have to deal with the City of New York. No doubt they'd ask me to pay to have the Army Corps of Engineers to come in to do a survey, then an environmental review, then ... who knows what?

I guess I'll get three of the polyform 21 inch balls at the next big boating gear sale and practice a bit more before the other boats move in. I'll try from both the upper and lower helm stations.
I'll also leave the lines on the dock and figure out a way to grab them easily.

No recommendations for a trainer on LI or on the Hudson?
