I noticed a little reddish fluid in the bilge last week and didn't have time to investigate but this weekend I was able to look a little closer. I have hurth hws63A1 ( ZF63A I believe they are now called) transmissions and I am getting fluid leaking on the port side. I mopped up the mess and started the port engine to see if I could see where it might be coming from and no luck. The fluid is a little low due to the leak so I am guessing it may not leak unless it is full. I wasn't able to get any ATF today so will look again next weekend. Has anyone run into this? I was told these units had porosity issues and sometimes leaked from the case, put a pan down add a little fluid and keep on going. I like things to be in good shape so I didn't really like that response.

Thanks for any insight,

Do you know how many hours are on the transmissions? It could be a shaft seal.

575 hrs on trannies and engines. I suspect front or rear seal too. I am going to add some fluid and see if can detect a leak.

If you can clean it and wrap it with an oil diaper you should be able to locate the area of the leak. IMO porous casting would have shown up long ago. The correct answer is usually the simplest.

Morning,
Try a leak detection kit. Less than $75. http://www.ntxtools.com/network-tool-warehouse/MTC-53351.html
This is just an example. I've seen them at NAPA and O'Reily's. Might just save you tearing down your tranny unnecessarily.

I have used dyes in a/c systems before. I will give that a try. I bet the dye will show up pretty good with a UV light and a dark bilge.
Thanks for the replies.

I serviced both transmissions this weekend and installed the dye as well. Took the boat out for 30 min cruise and returned. No sign of fluid leak so far. I believe the dipstick was loose as well as the filter housing cover not seated properly. Hopefully all is well and time will tell.
