I mentioned on another thread here that I reported some outdated information on one of our Delta charts. I filed the report at the link provided here on 11/30/07. NOAA sent me the following reply on Thursday, 1/10/08.

I am a big believer in having the latest updated charts for getting around in the Delta. I like the NOAA paper charts. These are the same charts that get copied for the commercial POD (print on demand) charts. You can view the latest charts here. These online charts are good for planning your boat trips. SF Bay Area and Delta charts begin with chart No. 18640.

Buy the NOAA paper map-folded charts here. Buying the charts from the government costs less than the commercial POD charts. After all, you already helped pay for them. Type in the chart number(s) you want on the upper right corner of the page, hit the button next to it and you will get a shopping cart with your chart(s).

This is a copy of the report I made to NOAA Nautical Charts and their reply. I filed the report here:

Printed below is a tabulated listing of the information
you provided on 11/30/2007.

Report number: 5342
Date submitted: 11/30/2007
Name: xxxxxxxxxxx
Organization: NONE
Email: xxxxxxxxxxx
Daytime phone number: xxxxxxxxxx
Time zone: Pacific
Date observed: 2002-2007
Time observed: 2002-2007
Affected charts: 18662 21st Ed.
Position information: 38 degrees 15'28.70"N
121 degrees 40'38.16"W
Discrepancy Description: Observed by myself several times in person over the last five years and verifiable by Google Maps aerial photo linked below. There is extensive partial flooding of Liberty Island and East Prospect Island by Army Corps of Engineers. This location is just north of the confluence of Cache Slough and Prospect Slough. The flooded area extends from Cache Slough northward and floods Little Hastings Tract, much of East Prospect Island and Liberty Island as far north as 38 degrees 18'22.47"N on a year long basis. Water depth ranges from the soundings provided on chart 18662 to as little as two feet and less in the marshy northern reach into Liberty Island. This area gets a little traffic (a few to several boats per day) by local fishing boats, sailboats and power cruisers.

Resolution/Response
Thank you for your observations and information. This is going to require further research in the office and field work on site. Once that is done we will be able to update the chart.
Thank you.

Thank you for your interest in NOAA's Nautical Chart Products.
We appreciate you taking the time to bring this matter to our attention.

NOAA requires verified data and a formal review process to make chart changes. Your local USPS power squadron works with NOAA in what is called cooperative charting program. Consider joining with them if you want anything to get done because they have the necessary tools.

Thanks Bruce. I had no idea NOAA worked with the local Power Squadrons to get local charting done. I'll be looking into this. I see from looking around the 'net this morning that NOAA has an "Adopt a Chart" program. With the number of charts in use for this area, keeping them all up to date could take a lot of time and effort.

Most Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla also provide this information to NOAA via their Chain of Leadership. NOAA will probably request [via official channels] the Auxiliary send a trained ATON officer out to the area to confirm your information and report their findings back. Reports such as yours expedite the process, but nothing gets changed based on informal information.

An alternative to these raster charts are the NOAA Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC's) which are also free and updated frequently. I checked the NOAA raster and vector charts for Franks Tract and the both show the recent wreck in the eastern corner near False River. These ENC's seem to work well with most coastal navigation software and have a wealth of data hidden within their databases.
