Guy in my marina is CGA and he told me it's the opposite.
They are going to be doing more patrols for free unfunded because the Coast Guard has no money.
Guess that is also why we have no buoys!

Your guy is talking through his hat. Patrols are not free and are VERY costly to the boat owner. No one is going to spend 8 hours patrolling, feeding 3 to 5 guys, spending $300+ on gas, and wear and tear on his boat without reimbursement. He would be financing the Fed to the tune of $400+ per trip. No one is that rich not even Hellery.

Joe - my understanding here in SECTOR NY is that you can crew if all PPE is CG issued and properly inspected by a designated safety officer, and all have EPIRBs - so, if you patrol w/ a crew of all Coxswains, you are good to go... haven't tried it yet, though.

Walter - labor is free, and as of recently, PPE is free (when it's provided by the USCG - otherwise, a member is out over $80 for the PFD alone, before mandatory PFD gear.)
There is a reimbursement program for boat owners/coxswains for fuel, fixed per diem maintenance, fixed per diem meals.
Fuel reimbursement is at direct cost I believe. Maintenance reimbursement is based on a formula which, near as I can tell, is centered on engine run time and engine size. Meal reimbursement is based on military facility rates - something like $3.50 for lunch per person. Realistically, the total reimbursement one receives is usually less than total expenses.
There's no reimbursement for mandatory gear on facilities, e.g., tow or heevy lines, patrol signs or patrol ensign, megaphone, light list, coastal pilot, etc.
If someone thinks they're gonna join the Aux and make money by doing patrols, think again! Of course, knowing you're helping your community - - Priceless.
