Installing new manifolds & elbows today on a "95 Mercruiser 4.3LX. I bought the ceramic/hot dipped OEM Mercruiser manifold & elbow {Mercury 99746A17 Exhaust Manifold & Mercury 807988A03 Elbow Exhaust}.
I am installing the manifold dry but considering adding a thin coat of perfect seal on the manifold/elbow gasket.
They are NOT the "E" coated manifolds & elbows.
Also, I believe the elbow and manifold surface where the attach have a coating (awaiting UPS). Does that surface need to be brought down to bare metal?

You may want to sand or file the paint off the mating surface. Make sure its a smooth straight edge with no burs from casting. On my crusaders it says to dry assemble but was recommended to me that I apply Permatex ultra black in a thin coat. I have always done that with no issue. Believe it was GVP who used to recommend that.

When I installed my Barr V6 center riser conversion exhaust on my 4.3 I used the Barr gaskets and Permatex Aviation sealer on the gaskets and flanges. I also did remove the paint and make sure the sealing surfaces were perfectly clean....
If you are using Mercury gaskets, see what they say to do, some gaskets do not take sealer. I emailed the tech support at Barr and for their gaskets they recommended the Permatex.
