What would be the safest approach into the harbor to get to Valentines Marina? We will be arriving from Atlantis (Nassau) Early July.

It looks to me from the North, but I am not sure how easy into the Harbor Mouth (south).

Thank you for any help.

Pick up a pilot at Spanishwells. I recommend using Jacque "Bandit" (242) 359-7403

I saw there were three pilots for getting in through the Devils backbone. He was one of them. My real question is whether or not I could get in through the east harbor entrance easier. We may skip a second stop in Atlantis and head directly to Valentines from Staniel Cay.

Thank you for the post.

You could do the cut on the South end.

But, how good are you at reading the water? Both for depth and wave/swell conditions at an inlet? Because the swell can roll through that cut pretty good even on a very calm wind day. Plus the seas can stack up on an out going tide.

If you are comfortable with all that and understand how to predict what the swell is most likely going to be when you arrive, go for it. It's all pretty straight forward otherwise.

We probably will. The decision was whether to go straight from Staniel or stop in at Atlantis. We will most likely stop a day or two in Atlantis and head up to Spanish Wells. Thanks for the input.

Straight from Staniel to either atlantis or Spanish wells means missing some of the best the bahamas has to offer...

Just for ****s and giggles, how much would a pilot cost?

Depends on the size of the boat some what. But around $150 including tip and a couple of free loaves of home made bread or Jonny cakes.

Pascal,

We will be in the Bahamas all of June and July, this is just one leg I am trying to work out. We plan on 3 weeks from Atlantis down to Staniel prior to heading to Eleuthera.

In the Exumas, we plan on Highborne, Shroud, Waderick Wells, possibly Compass (been there and not too exciting), (Not Sampson, John Malone now owns), and Staniel. I see no reason to repeat the trip north. I have been to all of these places before, and they are my favorites.

Cambridge Cay looked good to us when we checked it out with the dink. I agree coming in around the back bone with a pilot is an easy ride. We used Woody and enjoyed the trip. We stopped in Spanish Wells for an overnight and then hit Harbour Island with Woody the next day. Coming in from Nassau to Spanish Wells, I would use the South side of Royal.

Skip highborne , there is nothing there...

Cambridge is nice with the bell rock.

Normans is always a favorite not spjust the plane but also all teh sandbars north of the anchorage by th lagoon entrance,

Compass has some nice trails and a nice spot to do some hiking to the sound side, inclusind that half destroyed home on the cliff that has been made into an outdoor gym

If you're going to the way to Staniel, from Cape Coral, so yourself a favor and push 35nm further south. Great Guana cay has nice rocks for snorkeling and beaches, stop for lunch at TY sunset Grill on littel farmer then head being Musha to rudder to visit the mermaid and the piano. Finally, take another day at Lee stocking (ghost town aka abandoned marine reseRch center), trails and great beaches (anchor in williams bay) and go another couple of miles to off Barraterre to the natural hot tub and the active blow holes on Boyse. Well worth it.

Skip Gtown, not really worth the last 20 miles run unless you have plenty of time.

I'm a big fan of the southern Exumas, different from the northern cays and very boats.
