"BP oil spill shows what happens when corporations control regulatory agencies. It's just best to let big business protect the environment and everyone on the Gulf Coast, right? ""

And the poor reaction and lack of leadership from Zero shows what happens when politicians are in charge. Either way, we're screwed!

So if you were POTUS, what would you have done differently?

Simple- enforce regulations that are already in place.
No surprise here as to yzer's suck up, kiss ass, government knows best attitude.

MMS go-ahead for Deepwater Horizon happened in February 2009, back when the new Obama administration had other items on the plate, like a stimulus plan to keep the US from the quick slide into depression. Cleaning up the mess in Interior and MMS wasn't a priority at that time. MMS had a dismal record during the Bush administration as well, but that doesn't excuse failures that came to a head on Obama's watch.

The BP disaster brought the urgency of Interior Department reform into clear focus for everyone. The Obama administration is making the moves to bring this about.

Harlan, please keep a respectful tone when addressing my posts. This kind of personal insult is a specialty of yours and one of the reasons I no longer post in NBR.

Don't expect any of the moderators here at BE to enforce forum rules regarding personal insults when the target is a non right-winger.

I stand by what I said. As usual, you make excuses for the inept administration of Obama. Whether you post or not matters not to me.

Yzer, I don't know what I'd do, to be honest. I'm not the POTUS - I never said I had the ability or qualifications to lead this great nation. He thinks he's qualified. All the sheeple that voted for him think he's qualified. Ok - then he should lead. Instead, he's bumbling around like a doofus and blathering on about legal liability. I KNOW they're liable for cryin' out loud! Everyone does! Fix the damn problem and then worry about grandstanding. Apparently, that's all he knows how to do.

All that can be done is being done. There isn't enough oil boom or dispersant on the planet to fix an oil spill as enormous as this. Oil travels on top of the water, inside the water column and along the bottom. Where submerged oil travels and where it surfaces is an educated guess, at best. The simple fact is that a busted deep well blowout preventer and riser at 5,000 ft. deep can't be fixed. So far, any remediation of the blow-out is only partially effective. This spill won't stop until plugged with the relief wells as late as August.

We are accustomed to fixing every problem by throwing manpower and resources at it but we are out of our element in the sea. The challenges of the BP spill only illustrate the foolishness of working in our oceans without an effective "Plan B."

Liability is an issue because one side in politics holds the White House and is responsible for getting the money and the other wants the first to fail. Today's "Texas Shake-Down" is a perfect example.

Here is a perfect example as to why things are running so smoothly.:-)

We in Louisiana have seen the effectiveness of the government in crisis, both Katrina and now this. It seems there is no difference which political party is in office, they are both inept and incompetent. Yet, there are those among us who think the politicians are the solution to all that ails us, in spite of the shameful dog and pony show yesterday.
Wait until you see the horror stories about payment of the 20B$ to the people damaged.

Most of that 20B$ won't go to the people it should go to. Like all government run 'programs' the money will 'evaporate'. Sure, a few people will get a few bucks but the rest will disappear within the administration.

Until obamma and his interior sec. understand how deepwater drilling works, the shut down will stay in place. Makes no sense.
The MMS is not dumb, but they are lacking in deepwater experience. They are also lacking in funds.
This is the administrations fault. They cut people, they try to cross train people with no drilling
experience, they cut educating their employees.
This is what you get when you cut funding for what matters to give funding on how to save a spotted
owl or a fish in a river that is drying up.
Save the fish, kill the economy.

This is purely human error, on both the gov't side and on BP's side of the ball.
Since the MMS doesn't know enough about deepwater drilling and the company man's push to save money,
we lost 11 good men.
Killing drilling for 6 months will delay new production in the future. No new reserves, no oil co.
investment, price of gas goes up, don't bitch to me.
