Water in Gas

July was not kind! For quite a while and in two boats, I have used a product called Star Tron. I did, however, run into a severe water/gas issue that this product turned into a nightmare. No, I'm not blaming the product at all but through my own failure to realize how bad the problem was, I turned it into a nightmare.

Regal 292, twin 350's. Two gas tanks. Dock hand inadvertantly partially filled the starbord tank with water (found that out way down the line).

Depart marina Sat morning. Calm wind, perfect temp (just trying to set to tone!) Lazy long cruise all is fine. Advance throttles, bow comes up and starbord engine drifts to sleep! Restart attempt fails. Troubleshoot and fuel/water separator saturated and full of water! No gas in it at all. Empty filter and reinstall. Disconnect carb side and crank engine (yes, safely) clean gas comes out. Prime engine, connect fuel line and restart. Ran fine, problem solved. Advance throttles same problem. Check filter again full of water. Apparant that fuel pickup in tank is in rear and anytime bow rises...see a pattern?

Fuel valves to port tank and all is fine. Back at marina, told our machanic what happened and suggested that he transfer fuel from starbord tank to the port one which was less than 1/4 (starb full) and use some large seperators to filter out the water. There was a huge problem with that since I didn't know how much water was in the tank. Added sick amounts of Star Tron to tank, let it sit overnight and nightmare began Sunday (and no, why tell the maechanic about the additive?!)

According to the manufacturer, "Enzymes in Startron prevent the water molecules that are in fuel from combining and forming a distinct water layer," I can attest it does that well!

The water mixed so well with the gas that all of it passed to to port tank with the separator only removing about a quart of water! The rest was pumped into the port tank contaminating both tanks! I did not know this until taking the boat out for a test. All I can say was thankfully towing was payed up!

During the following week our mech removed over 7 gallons of water between the tanks! He told me that it would have been much easier if I would not have used the additive prior to getting the water out. Lesson learned! I do still use the product and will continue to do so as a preventitive measure but will never use it or any other product like it if there is water contamination already present!

Found out almost two months later that because my pumpout is on the starb side the dock hand thought he would do me a favor and fill the water tank...

Ever since this experiance, I continue to have issues with the starb engine. All fuel related so next week off the carb comes off...

What a bummer! Didn't the dock hand see that the fuel fill says GAS on it? I use staybil min my tanks since I had the high pressure fuel pump gum up on me from bad gas. So far so good. Hope you get it running good again.

I'll bet he did and is why he stopped and filled the rest with gas!

it will probably save you a whole bunch of aggravation to call a proffesional fuel polishing service and have them take care of it. it will be over in an hour or so and you'll have a clean bill of health. you have a couple options, have them remove and dispose of the fuel or clean it up. if you don't know of a service in your area that does this, contact a fuel delivery service company there, they will certainly be able to reccomend someone. you'll have peace of mind when its done that you've really closed the chapter on this problem. send your dock hand's boss the bill for cleaning the fuel i think its pretty reasonable.

Our starboard gas fill and holding tank pump out are right next to each other on the starboard stern. Our fresh water fill is on the bow starboard side...I like how Regal separated the two this far a part. Just need to make sure the dock hand never pumps out the fuel tank or puts gas in the holding tank.

On our previous boat, a Sea ray, the fresh water fill was right next to the gas fill and I did accidentally add water to the gas tank once. I caught it quick, only a few gallons went in I think. I added some E-Zorb and never had an issue.

I use 8 oz of Startronon every fill up and so far so good. BTW, it's $8 at Walmart and $13 at West Marine.

Speaking of getting the fill ports mixed up reminded me of an incident this summer at a Holland marina. Gas was accidentally pumped into a boat's holding tank and then to fix his mistake he pumped it out with the waste pumpout hose. The ensuing explosion in the sanitary sewer system caused plumbing damage to area condos but no one was hurt. I either do it myself or closely supervise fill and pumpout operations to avoid those kinds of problems.

Sky King, I would have thought if the dock hand made the mistake that he should have told you about it. It would have been the right thing to do.

Well I did get the carbs off and had them rebuilt. What a differance! The engines start easier and are very smooth. I'm glad the ordeal is finally over. Had the boat hauled for bottom paint and other misc maintenance, getting ready for this next weekend (supposed to be in the 70's). Went down to the boat today to check on it and I guess it's time to replace the house battery (won't hold a charge). I replaced both start batteries when one failed last year but I guess thats par. The fridge won't shut off, even when I turn the control to off so I shut off the breaker. The good news is that everything left in the fridge is frozen. Thank god as I know the compressor still works! I would ask when does it end but I've been boating for too many years to know better!

It's always something when you are dealing with boats. Glad to here you got the engines running again. I haven't started mine up in months and I already have a sticky shift cable to replace. Hopfully that is all I have to do besides the commissioning work.
