The closeout barn at the Oakland WM is being shut down. Remaining stock is 50% off. There's a stack of Lewmar 400 and 600 windlass' there. The closeout price is $250, which is pretty good. If you dig, you can find various hardware bits and such. No affiliation to WM.

thank you very much for the update. when is the final day? do they still have all of the hose?

Thanks for the info, Monterey10. That's a good deal.

I've heard that every WM store will soon have a bargain section, so all of that type of inventory will now be divided up amongst the stores? Have you heard of this?

Thanks...

I noticed that the Oakland store had a close out table in back, by the bathrooms. It had various ODD pieces of hardware, nothing like the close out barn.

Regarding hoses, I didn't see many. It looked like there was a box of 1/2" fresh water hose. There were a lot of engine gaskets for Ford marine engines. The electronics section was pretty well picked through. They did have a large number of black and white hand held GPS'. The place was pretty well picked over with exception of the LewMar Horizon windlass'.

I bought a FloScan, Gas fume detector and a windlass, all at good prices.

WM stores used to have their own "close out" sections for merchandise that had been discontinued, returned, opened, etc. Then the "retail superstars" who ran the place for a while decided that they had to have "upscale" environments and they consolidated the "close out" activity to the Oakland site. (Sometime take a serious look at the money that was wasted on decor in the Richmond store to get an idea of how stupid some of the "retail superstar" decisions were.)

More recent management has returned to sanity, understanding that boaters are not 16 year olds shopping for shoes. Closing the Oakland bargain store is likely the result of realizing that it's as easy to sell junk cheap in each store as it is to ship it to Oakland and sort and price it there. The Oakland store was a treat to visit, though. I got some great stuff cheap there.

Along with what BTG said, having the batgains in each store will draw folks there and, hopefully, entice spur of the moment purchases at reagular price too.

I sure hope WM management has improved. Before I purchased my trim tabs from Boat Fix, I went into my local WM to see the unit and ask some questions. The idiot did not hlep me at all and just kept trying to "up sell" me----something I really hate! Most of what he told be was wrong according to Bennett's website.......

We stopped in to the West Marine in Stockton on our way home from the boat. They had a big closeout section in front of the checkout area. Also numerous 40% off closeout ticket items all throughout the store. Upon checkout she mentioned that they would be expanding their closeout section. Husband picked up a great pair of boat shoes that were originally $64 for only $29. We stopped by for our Origa stove alcohol. Normally, this would have only been $14.65 a gallon. Well, boy were we shocked, it is now $30.99 for a gallon. She said it just went up last month, but couldn't explain why the big jump. Oh well, it was definitely worth the stop with all the other bargains.

does this mean they are going to close all WM bargain centers???

Meow,

All that demand for ethanol in gasoline is pushing prices up. And since buying out BoatUS's retail division, WM has been moving up prices. (When's the last time you saw 30 AMP power cords on sale for under $40?)

West's biggest competition is discount websites. Defender.com lists stove alcohol at $10.99 per gallon, but shipping is around $10 UPS plus a $20 "hazmat" fee, so WM has plenty of pricing room.

Boatfix and Defender Marine are great, and I use them both. They have the lowest prices you will usally find on marine items. Both offer fast and reasonable shipping. Boatfix has the advantage for a deep stock of many parts lines.

West is great when you need something off the shelf or on short notice. For the Sacramento area, it's the only choice. Svendsen's Marine
in Alameda is another of my favorite haunts. Svendsen's store has a website, now. They have some items in stock that I can't get locally or sometimes anywhere else.

Here in NY, the WM store had discounted items for last years models. Good deals on foul weather gear, etc. So looks like they are probably leaving the old gear at each store instead of consolidating it.

I've been going to the Oak bargain store from the day it opened. Got much of my electronics there...before they started bumping the prices up a few years ago.

Originally, there were only two bargain centers in the US. One back East and the Oak store.

Just got back. Makes you sick how low the prices are. Just got a VHF from BF. Still plenty of things. 75% off
