We went out to sea through the sokonnet river this weekend and around the point we came to a field of barrels in the ocean. we guessed they might be fishing nets anyone know what these are?

We almost "ran into" those last September right near the mouth of the Sakonnet as we were Seaward bound, and we were wondering the same thing. They were between Sachuest Point and Cormorant Rock/Reef. They're not charted as a fish trap area. I took a wide turn aound them, as I didn't know what/if anything was stretched between them. For me, it was only two barrels that I saw, spaced a couple hundred feet apart. Maybe they marked the ends of a net ??

Anyone know?

Yep, fish net barrel markers. Poorly marked in my opinion. I stay clear of Sakonnet river because of them. About 15 yrs ago skooting along the coast from Newport came upon them doing 30 knots, HOLD ON.... Scared the crap out of my passengers and myself. Life long lesson

Fish Traps otherwise known as boat traps. In past years they have been closer to shore.
They are currently just East of Cormorant Reef in about 60-70' of water. Really poorly marked and rarely have radar reflectors.
