Would like to take a run to the hudson do the Statue of liberty and stay the night..Im coming from Long Island and its my first trip that far west..

Thanks
Mike

My son and I just left Liberty Landing Marina located just north of the statue. Extremely helpful staff with decent accomodations and very well protected from the river.
Water taxis are located just next door for a trip to the financial center where you can catch a cab if needed.

Thanks Guys

How far do you think it is from oakdale long island? And is it easy to get to?

Thanks
Mike

Mike,
I will give another vote for Liberty Landing. The other marina is Chelsea Piers, but that is right on manhatten and I hear it gets kind of bouncy in there. Liberty Landing has a great view of Manhatten and the Statue and Ellis Island.

The trip there is easy but can get hairy, so you have to plan for it. If Ocean conditiions are favorable, go out Fire Island Inlet and run the coast to ambrose, under VZ, into NYC harbor and Liberty Landing comes up just past Statue and before the tip of Manhatten on the west there. Running at say 22 knots, I would say its at least 3 hours from Oakdale.

If the Ocean is not favorable, then run the inside, which is scenic and easy, just watch your buoys. Consider a stop in Island Park Paddy McGees for a meal on the water there. You will come out East Rockaway inlet, one of my favorite inlets. From the inlet its a short run to ambrose and under VZ if the conditions are favorable to run.

For the trip home, its the reverse, but have your waypoints marked for East Rock Inlet, Jones Inlet, and FI Inlet, so you can get a line from ocean to inside if you need it quick. If you want the scenic route go inside. If you want to get there fast, go outside. Personally I prefer inside only becuase I get bored running the ocean with nothing to look at. I like to see the homes, boats, bridges, etc, but then you also need to be on your game navigation wise since you must follow the channel.

The times we have done it we have had 6 - 8 foot breaking waves, we have had pea soup fog, and we have had flat conditions. Fog tends to collect around Ambrose. There are alot of large shipping boats coming thru. So you have to watch for them, they don't stop easily!!!

Not trying to scare you, just want to make sure your aware of all the conditiosn for this run, it is a great trip!!

Enjoy.

I would agree totally with Dave with making alternative plans in the event of worsening conditions. Have your trip plotted/charted to allow access/entry to alternate inlets. If not familiar with the inlets I would try to obtain local knowledge.
I did it in a 21ft boat last Thursday leaving Patchogue and got to the Vz Bridge in exactly 3hrs running 20kn.
I went out FI inlet with 4-5 ft breaking waves, with winds out of the SE. The wave period was large enough to allow for a safe ride.

Ditto all of the above, and I wonder if Liberty Harbor would be a good choice also. The ferry to Manhattan stops on that side of the inlet as well. Could be more restaurants etc. on that side of the inlet? I don't know we have not stopped there yet. But having been hammered by the 4th of July rates and Liberty Landing I'm willing to give them a shot.

You mean Lincoln Harbor, Dan? I hear it is much nicer now that they put in more wave attenuation. There is a guy on the Hatteras Owners Forum, "Noel" that lives there. We almost stayed there last year until we got a great deal at Great Kills. No way would I put in at Chelsea Piers; every time we have gone by there boats were bouncing all over the place. Money no object, North Cove in Manhattan is the ideal choice. Pascal has been in there a couple of times. http://www.thenorthcove.com/

Lincoln Harbor has been selected as the new home of the rock and roll museum. The wave wall accomplished very little.

If you enjoy riding on an old subway train complete with the noise and motion then Lincoln Harbor's metal docks and waves are for you!

That said the view of Manhattan is breath taking from there.

Dan is talking about Liberty Harbor which is on the opposite side of the Morris Canal from Liberty Landing.

Only problem is that you are disconnected from the bigger more lively marina and Liberty State Park. There are some great views and a really nice after dinner stroll down to the rivers edge. Great view of Manhattan there. Liberty Landing is $1 per foot more than Liberty Harbor. Electric at L Landing is more too.

If you stay at Liberty Landing, you can dink over to Liberty Harbor and then walk into the 'Nice' section of Jersey City from there. Some great places to eat and drink, The Light Horse Tavern is a great place to do just that. Plus live music.

Dave / Guys
Thanks again for the info.. Dave i have a question... one is there a corse i can take to really learn how to use my GPS... dont know how to do wave points and so on... second do you think one day soon we could hook up at maybe wathch hill and you can show me and i can mark down on the chart the rout you took?

Thanks agin for all of your in put guys

Mike

First of all, they are not "wave points" they are "way points". You should look at your owners manual as a start, most of them are pretty good at telling you how to program way points. See if there is a video that provides training on your particular unit.

The best way to learn how to use it, is to use it every time you go out.

if only staying for a day or two, the price doesn't make a huge difference.. I tihnk Lib Ldg is $5 a foot, North Cove is $6 a foot, and you are right in the heart of manhattan. Great area within walking distance of Chinatown, the village, etc... nice strolling along the battery as well.

I guess with a smaller boat, wake can be an issue at north cove so it depends on what kind of boat you have.

you GPS came with a user manual... time to open it. Unless you have a garmin, if so it's so user friendly a blonde could use it :) seriously, it's all explain in there but keep in mind your paper charts are as important if not more. review the router on paper first.

Geo no, I mean Liberty Harbor. http://www.libertyharbormarina.com/index.htm

I would never recommend Lincoln Harbor for a peaceful night. We've stopped there last year to drop people off and spend a night but we did not like it for the rocking. I have to load a vid up at youtube. I'll do that later if I find it.

Thanks for the correction on the various LH's. We'll keep that in mind next time up (please Lord, let there be a next time up!), though we have become fond of Great Kills.
