Where'd the oil go

BTW, others here have the same boat as you. I have a 78 Catalina with a Merc.
 
It's amazing the attention it gets. It's a 1985 Catlina 253. I virtually rebuilt it in 2014. About the only thing left that is 1985 is the fiberglass. As I mentioned earlier I completely repowered it from serpentine belt to propeller shaft with new because I wanted reliability. The work never ends but my wife and I love it and so on we go.....

Just as a follow up - I sent an email to Mercury Marine describing the oil loss. Their answer? They said it was "normal for a new engine to consume larger amounts of oil during break in". Does anyone out there buy that it is normal to loss 2 - 3 quarts of oil in 30 hours of operation?

It is normal for engines to burn oil during break-in, but my answer to your question would be no, that's excessive to me.

But along with a lot of other things on new engines, I would have checked/adjusted the oil and all fluids before every foray during that extended break-in time.
 
To the "Normal High Oil Consumption in Break-In" statement by MerC: Our "New" engine is a reman from MerC Remanufacturing, using a "pre-owned" 5.7, bored .040 over to .357 CID with the rest new. I think they do it to circumvent pollution rules.

Anyhow, I've changed the oil twice and run 170 hours since it was installed at the end of 2015. Been trying to change it around 50-75 hours, and I'm using their Syn/Blend 25-40 oil. In those hours, I've added about 02 quarts in "make-up" oil. So their statement does not match at least this customer's experience.

But you were going to go run it, monitoring the oil level now that you know it's starting out full. How's that part going for you?
 
Sandy, you are right about checking, but I can't change the past. I should have checked, I didn't and now I've learned a lesson.
JD, Due to new health issues I haven't been able to run it lately. My point in re-starting this thread is that I'm totally disappointed with Mercury's response.

Then hopefully you'll soon find Self AND Boat WELL.

Re: MerC - You aren't the first one, and avoidance seems to be their default strategy.

Ron- Sorry, I didn't mean to beat you over the head about checking fluids & apologize for the way it must have read . It was more intended as a hint to other readers as this is BoaterEd... even though I make at least as many mistakes as anyone else. :)

Hope your health issues get nicely squared away quickly so you can go ahead and enjoy the heck out of your boat ASAP. I believe you are not the 1st to be disappointed in Merc's responses, but hopefully your engine concerns will indeed be a non-issue. Best wishes...
