When we bought our 1989 Regal 280 back in 2001, the wiper worked, but only if the windshield was wet... otherwise, it would trip the breaker.

We never used it much, so no worries..

In 2004, we upgraded some electronics, and ultimately added a new depth sounder which was formerly in one of the units we replaced.

I attempted to wire it to the Acc switch, but one of the contacts on the switch was broken - so, I swapped the switch with the wiper switch.

It took forever to get a replacement switch, and almost as long for me to get around to changing it out.. but I finally did.. after several wet weekend trips to PIB.. would have been handy to have a working wiper...

Now, even with the wiper arm off, it trips the breaker.. I took the cover off the motor and didn't see a name or part number on the unit.

Does anyone have any experience with fixing a wiper motor/arrangement? Since it's down inside the cabin, I left it alone for now.. just wondering if it's worth fixing over the winter?

Hi Jim,

Yep, I have the windshield pretty slick... so I don't really need them either as the water just rolls back off... just that I'd like for everything to be in working order if possible.

I wonder if I need to replace, or if I can take it apart and fix it/clean it up to get it working again?
From what I can see, it still actually looks brand new. Unfortunately, to take it out, will require that the deck thru opening is also re-bedded around the wiper I think.

If you can get at the leads from the wiper motor I would try a jumper to see if it is the unit or a wireing problem.

Only try it for a few seconds as if it is seized the wire will get very hot.

Hi Cliff,

I was sort of thinking the same thing... just unhook the wires and try it with a direct set of leads.. just for a few seconds anyway, to see if it needs a little extra current flow to get things moving.

Otherwise, I may need to take it out and disassemble over the winter to see if it's repairable.
That seems like a lot of work for as much as we use it... so, I hope the direct leads idea will work..

Second the RAIN-X route. If it is anything like the motor on my 2465, it is probably filled with water. I just pitched it and rubber taped over the hole. There were some on the old site that had the same problem in their 4460's as well so it is not limited to smaller boats such as mine.

Be careful you don't get the rain-x on your vinyl windows thou. Initially looks fine but will cause them to turn yellow and crack.
