I gave up on Keurigs in my home kitchen 5+ years ago because the machine fouled frequently and I just didn't get the strong cup of coffee I wanted. I really like a cup from my French press, but it's a PITA on the boat. Has anybody found the single serving machines to work well, and can you recommend any K-cups that produce a nice, strong cuppa?
 
hate Keurig for same reason

Got Nespresso (6 months ago?) and really like it. I got the Vertuo. Downside is you can only get coffee from Nespresso (or through Amazon).
Their classic model has more options for coffee. we got the Breville branded Nespresso. I guess they license out the manufacturing, but I think the different options are pretty much the same
 
we also got the milk frothing machine. My wife likes cappuccinos and says it works great. Cool thing is the pods have a barcode and auto adjust how much water is used. You can buy single shot espresso pods, double espresso, 5oz and 7 oz coffees.
 
I agree on the weakness of Keurig. At home I usually use a Bialetti Moka stovetop pot...

I've used the Nespresso quite a few times in hotel rooms, it makes a good strong cup and sounds like a good option for on the boat...

LOL, that's hardly compelling. The footprint of your Nespresso is pretty big...~17 inches deep and it's 12 lbs. I'm on a small houseboat, and counter and cupboard space is at a premium...not like the 25-sleeper models that people love.

Not only does the machine auto set water amount, it also adjusts temp and brew cycle for each type of cup
 
Have you tried an Aeropress? Compact, much less messy than a French press or even a Bialetti because the coffee grounds are very dense and compact. It makes a strong, intense, and incredibly smooth cup of coffee very similar to an expresso.
 
I'm glad I'm not a slave to coffee....

We used to have a Keurig on the boat we run and then got a nespresso. The keurig has been sitting in storage for 4 years. At first we d set it up on the aft deck for breakfast but guests wouldn’t touch it and come inside for the Nespresso. Now pretty much everyone who tried it has bought one... when we drive to the mountains, we pack one in a bag with everything needed ...
 
If you have hard water, your Keurig will crap out on you. We went to this one 2 years ago. It has made 8-10 single servings a day without a single hiccup, and we have very hard water.

My water maker on the boat should take care of the hard water issue. How does the strength compare to Keurig?
 
Strength depends upon ounces of water used and coffee strength. In that regard, my Keurig suits me just fine. What other factors are you concerned about?

Exactly the same, and like Steve says, strength depends on whether you use light, medium, or dark roast.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. After considering the options and watching a couple of videos of what the insides of these machines look like in places you can't clean, I'm sticking with my French press. I will also never use an in-room Keurig machine in a hotel. YMMV, but probably not if you see the videos. I don't know about the Nespresso machine, but it just has too big a footprint.
