Flush mounted electronics

When boats come from factory with flush mounted electronics and then later you want to upgrade or replace a failed device how do professional installers deal with issues where the replacement may not be the exact same size as original?

1/8" starboard over opening, any color you want, cut new hole in it. Done it a couple of times already.

Lucite, which is lexan PMMA, tends to shatter when worked, difficult to deal with. Starboard is a plastic which works like wood. I drew a full size template at work in autocad, printed it out, transferred it to the starboard cut it out on my router table. Rounded over the edges. Looks professional. Would send pix but both those boats long gone.

Starboard is a high-density plastic that is relatively easy to work with. I've used it many times.
