This question is so detailed I won't be able to answer half of the questions.

There are many marinas in the Delta that offer good overnight facilities. Delta Marina in Rio Vista would be a great first stop for you. Fine facility with The Point restaurant and city of Rio Vista is a short walk away. Historically, Delta Marina has some of the least expensive fuel in the Delta.

Spindrift Marina, where we berth the boat is nice for an overnight and has a great restaurant right next door, on the levee.

Everyone will tell you that their marina is the best if that's where they stay. You really can't go that wrong with nearly any of them.

Here is a good starting point: http://www.californiadelta.org/deltamarina.htm

Piper Slough along Bethel Island is on the west side of Franks Tract. Several good places to tie up for the night there.

One of the things I like about the Delta is that it's so easy for cruisers just to anchor out for a night. We will stay overnight at a marina once and a while, though.

Here are the pump-out facilities:

I've always thought of the Delta as the place you went for secluded anchorages and the SF Bay was where you went for nice marinas next to pretty cities, elegant restaurants, jazz clubs and baseball parks

The Hal Schell delta map has the locations of the favored anchorages. You can get the map at most marina's.

Up in the delta, Tower Park and Herman & Helen's have been two of my favorite marinas.

When you look at any of these spots, keep in mind that the better ones have a good North/South running levee that protects you from the Westerlies.

If you come down as far as Benicia, you will find a top notch marina and a short walk to a very pretty city.

Bill,

I'll take a stab at this although I might need more information from you ... like why you want to go to Franks Tract. All of the bridges in the Delta use VHF channel 9 for requesting openings.

I've made this trip a number of times in the same model boat and I like to cut down to the central Delta via the Georgiana Slough at Walnut Grove. There is a municipal dock in Walnut Grove and three restaurants within easy walking distance as well as a tiny candy store that specializes in candy from our past. If you have an old favorite candy that you can't find anymore, chances are that she has it.

When you leave that dock, you'll pass under the Walnut Grove Bridge (green one) and almost immediately on your left will be the entrance to Georgiana Slough and the orange bridge. The next few miles you'll spend meandering down a tree lined slough without rip rap covered banks. You'll see lots of wildlife, egrets, blue herons and an occasional otter. At the south end of the slough, you'll pass by Oxbow Marina, which has a pool, but no restaurant, and enter the Mokelumne River.

Continuing south you'll pass Willow Berm and Korth's Pirate Lair marinas which are also nice spots to stop. Next you'll hit the San Joaquin river and you can turn to the east. The first slough on your starboard side is False River and will take you over to Franks Tract. If you had turned west, Spindrift Marina would be on your starboard which is a good place to stay with a restaurant and a convenience store.

This is personal, but I WOULD NOT cross Franks Tract with your boat. As Yzer mentioned, Piper Slough runs between Bethel Island and the west side of Franks Tract. I like to stay at the Rusty Porthole which I believe is located at Boyd's Harbor. They have decent docks and a good restaurant. There is also Bethel Harbor, and the Sugarbarge Resort and Marina that has the Paradise Bar & Grille and they may have a swimming pool, but I'm not sure. Across the southern end of Bethel Island is Sandmound Slough and the San Joaquin Yacht Club. They are a friendly bunch, have good food and several local restaurants and stores within walking distance.

If you continue south on Holland Cut you will find Connection Slough on your east side just about where the tall power lines cross the waterway. Turn to your east and continue until you see a small house on the north side. Just past that is a horseshoe shaped slough to the north. This a pretty protected anchorage and there are Chlorox type bottles ties into the trees on the levee. You can drop a stern anchor on the way in and tie your bow off to one of these bottles. I usually run my bow line through the loop and back to my boat so that I can release it easily when it is time to go.

For the trip back, you can continue east on Connection Slough and after you cross the San Joaquin you'll pass by Herman and Helen's Marina which has a restaurant. Continuing north now, you'll eventually reach Tower Park that has good guest docking and a nice restaurant. One word of warning though, if the wind and current are running be fairly aggressive when entering the guest docking area. The entrance is narrow and the current can really give you a push. Continuing north will take you back to the Mokelumne where you can turn west and return to the south end of the Georgianna Slough for the trip home.

An alternative way to go would be on the Old Sacramento River. From Franks tract you can take False River in either direction to reach the San Joaquin. Follow the San Joaquin to Three Mile Slough which will lead you over to the Sacramento River. You'll pass Outrigger Marina which has a good restaurant, but may be closed in winter. Once you hit the Sacramento River and turn north, you'll find Delta Marina on your port side. They have good protected guest docking and a great restaurant, The Point. As you're entering the harbor, don't be started if you hear a loud horn blowing. The bar overlooks the entrance and the bartender will often honk a welcome. (I almost had a heart attack on my first entrance thinking that I must be doing something wrong)

Leaving Rio Vista to the north, you'll want to take the first turn to the starboard, into the Old Sacramento. Be sure to favor the north side , it is marked, as there is a large sandbar on the southern side of the entrance. From this point you can't get lost, it is a straight shot with no turns until after you pass Sacramento.

One other return alternative is to continue past the Old Sacramento and turn into the next opening , Steamboat Slough. It is a nice ride up through vegetation covered banks and comes back into the Old Sacramento just above Walnut Grove.

I hope my suggestions have helped. It sounds like a great trip, I wish I could take a week off and do it myself.

Sugar Barge has a first rate resturant, a swimming pool and a pump out station.

By the way, False River only intersects the San Joaquin at light 25G. The section around Franks Tract from the False River is Washington Cut which ends at Old River. Old River ends at the San Joaquin at 54R.

Dave, I had the same experience pulling into Delta Marina for the first time.

The entry is kind of a blind corner that goes around the restaurant to the gas dock. The bartender hits that horn if he sees you coming in and that alerts outgoing skippers that another boat is coming through.

Yeah, when that horn went off I thought I must have committed some sort of navigational infraction or maybe they were warning everyone of an unfamiliar boat with a noob at the helm. The regulars at the bar probably get a kick out of seeing the bewildered-looking skippers coming in.

Delta Marina is great though, and one of the best run marinas on the Delta.

What is the best way to get to Giusti’s.
I have been there several times by land but never by boat.

Arnold,

Check the bridge schedule if you are going in a boat that will require an opening. It is called the Millers Ferry Bridge and is operational until 5:00pm during summer hours. At other times you need to give them from 3 to 24 hours notice.

this i printed for the full week trip
that ill plan this summer
i reposted on 03262007
about a shorter trip say a good place to dock for 1 night from sacramento marina
south not north of old sac , bill

rubyray, this time of year, the currents will be pretty strong. You will "fly" downstream, but plan on twice as much time/fuel heading back up the Sacramento. If you catch an incoming tide for your return trip, that will help make it easier.
