Hi, All,

Seeking your thoughts on a newer, smaller digital radar (like Furuno's 1623 2.2kw with a 15" radome) compared to a later model, well cared-for, higher power CRT ~4' open array.

Image clarity and target distinction are big pluses. Power draw is not really an issue.

Can we make an apples-to-apples comparison? If so, many thanks for any feedback.

I can only give a general opinion: The open array will give a nice tight beam, but a new, modern unit may make up the difference. ( I had a higher power dome unit. It was also a slightly larger internal array. Brought me halfway betwixt your two options ). Plus the open array has that big moving part to hit things with. ( and maintain ).

Also, I have never seen one, but the "broadband" units looked quite intriguing, esp if your usage was primarily "close-in" rather than distance seeing and weather tracking.

Maybe that helps a (little ) bit.

I think it was Lowrance that introduced them.
