1992 Kohler Genset Issue

This is the 6.5 model. It won't start. Rarely used. Part of the problem is the double throw switch on the front of the genset will not stay in the up position.

The battery is kind of week. Could that be causing it....?

When the battery is charged it turns over... It wants to start but you have to hold the start button to keep it going.... I know that double throw switch on the front must be in the up position...ideas welcome..Mark
 
The switch is working correctly, it should return when you let it go. If the genny does not see AC volts it will not stay running, try starting with a load (AC) on like your elec range. You may need to flash the stator.

Possible causes

no generator output - check AC voltage - flash the field - check stator continuity
K1 relay coil defective - if LED1 is lit, K1 relay is not getting power from stator, b1/b2 wiring.
No or low oil pressure - check oil pressure
Defective LOP shutdown - disconnect switch and isolate
defective HET or HWT switch - disconnect switch and isolate
 
This is a Kohler 6.5 CZ? If so: The double throw switch is a single throw circuit breaker. Replace.
Remove Controller cover. During cranking, relay K1 should light. If not, replace capacitor. If lit, check K4. Should be off. If on, a safety switch is grounded. First, top off oil, disconnect the Low Oil Pressure switch, and test. Engine off, this switch is closed and must open from oil pressure while cranking to RUN. Second, disconnect all 4 safety switches and test.
 
If this a cz model breaker off or on wont make difference if genny will start

Easiest trouble shoot is with service manual flow diagrams

From your description engine is running but only for as long as you hold down start

Does electric panel show any volts and how much circuit breaker needs to be on to see this or need to check voltage at Leeds inside controller box

If voltage 2 to 8 volts common issue occasionally trying to start with a load like 100 watt lite bulb may fix

This strengthens the field in rotor if doesx not help needed to go thru.a series of tests to see if bad capacitor bad stator rotor or rotor board

I and others have posted in past what the test are I am away and don't have acess to my manual but that should get u started
