I just reinstalled my carbs, after rebuild. My friend has 454 CI Volvo engines and he has a throttle spring. I don't have a throttle spring on my 350's and never remember any. I can't find any reference to a throttle spring for my engines online. Is there a requirement?

I don't believe I ever recall seeing a boat or land vehicle ICE without a throttle return spring.

Certainly both my old '88 Crusader 350 ci carbed engines had them and my present Crusader 5.7L MPI's have them.

Without one , you run the risk or likelihood of the throttle not closing all the way. Suggest you just add a spring to the carb linkage or it's throttle arm.

Some carbs have a circular return spring on the throttle shaft. You can add a return spring from
throttle lever to the anchor bracket for the throttle cable.

There is a torsion spring on the throttle shaft and it springs back when you open the throttle and let go. My friend's boat has an axial spring that stretches when the throttle is opened I believe in addition to the torsion spring. I'll have to look at his set up again.

Sandy,
I saw the photos in the link provided but I thought that spring set up on those Holley carbs may have been for a car set up. When you lift your foot off the accelerator peddle is required to spring back. You have to manually bring back the throttle on a boat. That's why, I thought there may be some differences between a car and a boat. I have looked specifically for a Crusader 350 set up online, I haven't seen any exploded diagrams that show an axial spring. I have had this boat for 20 years and never saw an axial spring connected to the throttle linkage. That's not to say there shouldn't be one. I would just like to have it right.

Thanks,

Johnnie
