This is on a '97 330 Sundancer.

I am about to replace my original Clarion M5170 stereo with something more up to date.

While at the boat today, I removed the 4 screws holding in the panel that the stereo is mounted to (Behind the cabinet door over the couch), and a latch that was in the way, but the panel would not come out.

It moved out about 1/2 inch but that was about it.

Does anyone know the best way to remove this panel. Maybe I should just pull harder, but I didn't want to damage anything.

Thanks.

I believe that behind the stereo there is a bent metal strap which rest on the bottom of the cabinet for support to lessen the shaking under way it is probable it is just getting caught on something. I would try pulling a little harder. There is no other way to access that cabinet so there can't be any other screws holding it in place. Also when you go to replace the stereo make sure you take note to how much room you have behind the door, some stereos may not fit if they have buttons that stick out too far. I helped a friend replace his in the same boat and ran into that problem he had to router out a hole on the back side of the door to clear a knob. if you where local I would give you a hand.

Coincidently, I just did this yesterday. I used a small prybar to gently pull the botton out first. I also removed the door to give me more wiggle room. It comes out tight. I wanted to see if there were any auxilliary jacks on the back that I could install a pickup for an MP3 player.

There are 2 sets of RCA plugs, but neither seemed to work with my MP3. If anyone knows what those RCA jacks are for, please let me know.

My best stereo guess is that the RCA's are line level outputs for a sub woofer amp and regular amp. or some combination of these.
Usually output plugs such as this are on a pig tail. Inputs are more frequently fixed to the back of the chassis.

Replaced ours (boat sold now) about 2 years ago. Open the doors on both sides of the unit, remove the screws that hold the panel the unit mounts in. Pop the whole panel out. Makes the job a lot easier.

After that there is some kind of clip (working off bad memory) that holds it in the metal frame.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'll give it another shot.

By the way, the two RCA plugs are line level outputs, if you want to feed them to an amp.

Yup, the RCAs on ours went to the amp in the aft cabin locker on the starboard side. I added a 2nd dedicated amp for the sub at the helm. I used the factory 4 channel amp then to power the 4 outside 5.5s. From the factory the 4 channel amp is bridged to the sub with the remaining bridge going to the 4 5.5s where they are paralleled together outside.

UPDATE ....

The best way to remove this panel is to back out the 4 screws, but do not remove them. Then use them as a handle to pull out the panel.

This weekend I installed a Clarion CMD6, which is perfect. When you reinstall the panel, you have to move it back an inch so the door will close.

Word of warning. Depending on the age of your current stereo, you may have to replace the CD changer and the wired remote. C-Bus control is now replaced by CeNet.

The new wired remote for this thing is about $180 including the extension ...

So, I went with a new RF remote that does not require line of site, since the stereo is mounted behind a door.

Nice job.

I removed and sold the Clarion CD Changer on eBay as we are 100% Satelite and IPod now. I added an XM Tuner and used the cd changer space for extra storage.

Thanks ...

I thought about doing the same thing, but my daughter has so many CDs she likes to bring, and just leave there I figured I'd just replace the changer. Found a new one with CeNet control on eBay for $70.

The front of this unit has a hinge on the bottom, and the face rotates down and gives access to a built-in CD player as well.

Ipods are connected via a built-in USB port.

I'm happy with the setup for now, and didn't spend a fortune. I can close the cabinet door and still have wireless remote control, which was one of the goals.

I do like XM, and may add that module later.

Next is a speaker upgrade. I currently have 4 Clarions that are about 3 years old, but they never have sounded that great.
