They say this happened in the Long Island Sound, but how could they be 17 miles south of Shinnecock?:
Coast Guard crews and a good Samaritan rescued five fishermen Sunday after their two vessels collided in foggy waters in Long Island Sound, authorities said.
The fishing vessels, Elizabeth J and Nina Marie, collided at about 10 a.m. in an area roughly 17 miles south of Shinnecock, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

A fishing boat out of Hampton Bays sank after colliding with another boat Sunday morning in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Elizabeth J collided with a recreational boat, the Nina Marie, at about 10:50 a.m. roughly 17 nautical miles from the Shinnecock Inlet.
One of the crew members of the Elizabeth J was ejected into the 56-degree water. He was rescued by the two people on the Nina Marie, but that boat quickly began taking on water so all three transferred to the Elizabeth J, according to Coast Guard spokesman Lieutenant Junior-grade Martin Betts.
The Elizabeth J also was taking on water, so the three crew members and the two passengers from the Nina Marie contacted the Coast Guard and deployed an emergency raft.
Two rescue boats were dispatched from the Coast Guard Station Shinnecock shortly before 11 a.m. along with two rescue helicopters from the Coast Guard's Cape Cod, Massachusetts station. They were in the area of the accident by about noon, Lt. Betts said.
After getting the call, the Coast Guard contacted another fishing vessel in the area and that ship, Adventuruous, picked up all five people at 12:20 p.m. then rendezvoused with the Coast Guard boats, which transported the five people back to shore.
The Elizabeth J sank but Sea-Tow attempted to fix the leak on the Nina Marie and tow it back to shore, Lt. Betts said. As of 10 p.m., it was not clear how successful that effort was.

That's the more accurate article. My next door neighbor is a Suffolk Marine Bureau cop and showed me pics that were sent to his phone. The dragger was T-Boned by the sportfisherman. Big split in its port side. Amazing no-one was killed

As Dave(Currentsea) was wondering how two boats could hit, there are general lines of travel out there and most of the open water is pretty much just that, Open water.
They both had radar but only the dragger had his on or even knew how to use it. Most people I know who have radar don't have it on most of the time. A former friend, who's been fishing longer than me, was once chided by the commercial party boats because he was running north to south and back north again, parallel to the bridge in the fog. He didn't know that the golden Gate Bridge (or any bridge) looked like a wall on radar. If you don't use it, you don't know what to look for. Also, have the radar set up so it's looking just over your bow.
