Hi,

My outboard does not charge the battery.
1) After sitting with the solar panel trickle charge all week, it starts and runs fine for a few hours then didn't start. Jump pack worked. Battery was dead (8v)
2) Put in fresh battery, tested at 12.1v Started and voltage dropped to 12.0v while running. This shows me there is no charge.

Can someone give me an overview of how this is supposed to work? I hear about a stator and rectifier. I see the rectifier is ~$30 so I might try replacing that first. I assume this regulates the voltage where the stator provides it?

Somebody with a service manual can provide testing instructions for the Stator. It's energized by magnets in the Flywheel. And the Rectifier, too, for that matter. Many older outboards do not have "regulators" in the automotive sense. They simply put out a few amps when they're used up they're used up. If they aren't used up, they aren't enough current to damage the Battery.
 
I ordered the rectifier and here's why....
The engine did get wet last year, I recently replaced the starter.
I doubt the stator is bad, it is all pretty mechanical. Plus the motor runs fine on the smaller coils.
Nice to learn there are two sets of coils on the stator/flywheel. A small set to provide juice to the spark plugs and a larger set to charge your battery.

I'll keep you posted.
 
You are correct in that there are 2 sets of coils. one for the engine and one for the charging. What usually destroy`s then is trying to charge up a dead battery.Go here to view and print pages http://162.144.28.33/lib/library.html#
The stator produces AC (square wave DC ) that goes to the rectifier /regulator . The AC leads are usually yellow
so find those on the rectifier and measure the AC voltage. If there is AC voltage, change to DC and read the output at the red and black of the rectifier

Thanks guys, I didn't bother testing, I put in a new rectifier and that seems to have fixed the issue.
