I have a 03 3860 and ran across this today. Does anyone have any info about this?

This is a sharp, FRESH WATER, ONE OWNER boat. It has been meticulously cared for and shows it. There were problems with the 2002 and 2003 Volvo Penta engines. This owner sued and was able to have both engines replaced. Total hours on the boat-470 hours. On the new engines-141 hours. This boat has almost every option available from Regal. The owner added underwater lighting.

Might have been the oil line crimps that failed. There was a recall on that.

Rommer,
No I know 1st hand about the oil line crimp. This is what I found on line.

Water ingestion is a common problem in General motors blocks used by Merc and Volvo. The camshaft on fuel injected engines was designed and ground with an overlap. Exhaust open for part of the intake cycle. This is fine on auto's but on wet exhaust marine engines it sucks wet vapor into the cylinder at idle or low R.P.M. and on raw water cooled engines it rusts the exhaust valves and causes them to stick.I have a 7.4 Volvo that #4 exhaust valve stuck and after inspection I had to replace all exhaust valves and guides. I ended up completely going through the engine as the valve job did not return the compression to all cylinders. I asked Volvo for assistance and they did not even have the common courtesy to reply to my letter.I did not ask for a freebee ,but for a fair price on a replacement engine. The boat manufacturer offered to install the new engine at no charge if it was shipped to him. Many Carolina Classic owners have this problem with Volvo 7.4&8.1 engines. I am seeing an attorney that has marine experience and feel a Class Action Suit is needed .I will gladly foot the bill to start this action. Any interested parties can contact me at seaprincerb2@gr5tfirstcoastmail.com.

That is something that has been known for quite sometime, the valve overlap issue. It helps the engine create more power. How much of an issue it is is subject to some debate. Not an expert on this but IIRC it has a lot to do with the riser height above the waterline. Some boats have more than others, some have less than merc/volvo require.

I think kellyg has been having this issue with is 7.4 engines from Merc or at least something similar.

I have more than 400 hundred hours so I guess it more or less wait and see. If I develope this problem I may have some recourse.

Thanks,
teve

Rommer,

Yes I continue to have water ingestion issues. About 1 month ago, I began to loose power and discovered that I have 60lbs compression in cylinder #5. I performed a leak down test and confirmed a leaky exhaust valve. This is a remanufactured engine with 46hrs on it. This is the third time in the last 3 years....getting a little tired of yearly valve jobs/remans being considered normal maintenance.
I contacted Regal, who in turn had me contact a Merc. tech to check on the installation specifications. No surprise here, the exhaust angle along with riser height was found not to follow Mercs specs, on both engines. Regal has been great with working along with me to find a resolution. They are currently in negotiations with Merc to assist.
Regal has to date never failed to offer their assistance, even on out of warranty issues. To me, this is what seperates Regal from some other manufacturers IMHO.

KellyG,

I am sorry to hear of your continuous problems. I like the way you never let it kill you boating spirit.

I echo your thoughts on Regal's commitment to their owners. I have been assisted many times with items out of warranty.

I sincerely hope your water issue is resolved.
