Hello all,

I have been searching for a new boat and have been deciding between a Bayliner 288, Meridian 341, and Carver 35 SS. Today we saw a 2005 33 SS which "looks" very clean. We took a test ride and "all seemed well", though I nothing to compare it to as my current boat is a 20 foot CC with a 175. The boat has 49 hours on it, which I am told is virtually new.

Can anyone comment on this craft with their knowledge or experience? It has twin crusaders 6.0's, AC, Gen, Raymarine radar, stereo/CD, two TVs, galley, foldout couch, etc.

Can anyone tell me what this mght be worth? Any positive or negative comment? All comments are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

hi TurboWarp - we have an '06 33ss and just love the boat. We chose the second stateroom option as we have a 3 yr old. We have the 8.1 crusaders but as I understand there is very little difference in performance with the 6.0's. Good luck - you will love the boat - post pics when you get it - here is a pic of ours! Cheers! John

Still trying to fix a price. I have seen from 150 to the dealer's list as 229. Any advice?

Another question. When I test drove the boat, with the salesman at the helm. When he ****ed into gear, it banged into gear. Is this normal?

Hi TurboWarp - where are you buying the boat? just compare options and make sure you are comfortable with the dealer. We have had no real problems with the boat other than small stuff -- we(the dealer) had to replace the vinyl floor in the galley 2x becuse it kept lifting - but other than that its been great.
As far as the banging into gear - as far as I am concerned that is NOT normal - my boat shifts effortlessly and i do not hear any clunks or banging - id make sure the transmission checks out! you'll love the boat! Post pics if you can! Cheers! John

Thanks for the reply. I did not really think anyone would design a boat to bang into gear. I am planing to have the engine and trans checked out if I ever get a decent price. Do you think an extended warranty is a good idea for an 05 with 50 hours? Also, how much should such a boat cost? It has only one cabin. Someone also told me that a boat turned in with 50 hours is a red flag. Any thoughts

Thanks !!!

How high was he idling the engines when they banged into gear??? Some of these cowboys don't reduce the idle to dead slow before shifting, and it can cause a clunky noise when they go to shift from neutral...

Pete, I se you are from Kingston. I was born in Hudson and lived in Tivoli and Rhinebeck before leaving in 1969. I am nor sure how fast we were going, but we were moving when he shifted out of and into gear. Do you think a review of the trans by a qualified tech would reveal such or other problems

Any time you can get a qualified professional to look at something you're better off,
IMHO...

Kingston is a great place, although it must be so much different from when you were last
there all those years ago! I actually live 65 miles away down in Putnam County, but the
Rondout is so attractive we spend our weekends up there - one nice thing about Carver
cruisers is they are the perfect summer home, even when you don't leave the dock :) !!!

look at the carver brochures for 2005 on this forum's "sticky".

For the U.S.: 7 years Structural hull warranty, 5 years hull anti blister, and 1 year limited everything else. The hull warranty is transferrable, but Carver requires that the boat be surveyed by a professional prior to covering the boat...plus, it can only be transferred by the selling dealer

OK All,

The dealer and I finally made the deal and I plan to puchase the 2005 Carver 33 SS. Engines are 35 hours. Genset is 25 hours.

Question: Should I get an extended waranty? They offer 2 year and 3 year. The three year is almost twice the cost of the 2 year. They offer Passport.

I know this has probaly been asked a trillion times (cubed) but I need to hear your opinions and experiance.

I wanted to get on the water this (long) weekend but won't makle it. Have to get the suvery done.

Thanks all !

Congrats on the 33 SS, it's an awesome boat!! Never heard of Passport, but it might be prevelant in your area. We use First Protection and have no problems with them

Awesome. Agree the survey must be done first, but what a bummer to miss the holiday weekend. I'm sure you'll have many many great weekends to make up for it if the boat checks out.

Good Luck and enjoy, I had a pissport extended warranty and had no luck with it. They claimed all my problems were either not covered or found a way around them. Spend your money on a surveyor, insurance policy and mechanic. Billy K.

There should be NO noise going into gear. The EFI/MPI engines will not come down as fast as a carb engine and maybe the cowboy did not know this. My Starboard is a bear to get to idle RPM. My mechanic seems to think it may be a worn cable. The whole rig only has 170 hours on her. That may be what is happening to yours as well. Something to have the surveyor check. Oil analysis is a must for all running gear regardless of how new. I have Merc 6.2's and you can't hear a thing going in and out of gear. IMHO Crusaders are far superior so I would accept no less.

Thanks for all the input. They changed the engine oil and filter and the engine tech says that now the oil analysis won't work.

They are also saying that the engine tech must be certfied on the crusaders to do a copression check. I this a notmal request? They also say the boat suveyor must be certified. Any comment on this requirement?

Who do you all use for insurance?

I should be on the water now !

RamSport can you get an extended warranty on a 1988 Carver 2757 Montego with First Protection?

TurboWarp

Man...I wish I could! No, they only go back like 5 years. As far as insurance...I have mine with Nationwide...they're pretty good, pretty cost effective, but I've never had a claim thus far. I may check out Progressive next time the policy is due. Oh, and anyone can do a compression test. It's just rmoving the spark plugs and putting the tester in.
