My friend Jim who specializes in restoring and repairing wooden boats had a nasty accident a week or two ago. While working with his jig saw, he accidentally cut off two of his fingers on his right hand and the tip of a third. The hand surgeons did a phenomenal job saving the two most important fingers and they are hopeful of a nearly complete recovery. But after the pins are removed, he will have to undergo months of therapy to get things working correctly again. Hopefully he will be able to stop by and "talk boats" for a while and maybe show off his fingers!

Flutterby, sorry to hear about Jim's accident. I hope he stops by, I didn't get to meet him at last year's Rendezvous. So far we have 11 handcrafted boats comming and I plan to do more to get the word out. Dawg

Jim is very shy [th] and I understand he went and observed, but did not speak to anyone. If I had known he was going, I would have made it a priority to be there to get the conversation going.....as you all know, I'm not shy!

Flutterby, We are tooling up to make some keychain floats for the Rendezvous. It will be wood, the shape of a can bouy, have the Boat Builder Rendezvous brand burnt in on one side and the skipper's home port bouy number burnt in on the other. I assume like me you turn off the San Joaquin at bouy 54R to come down Old River so come see me at the Rendezvous and I will have a 54R key chain float for you. If Jim comes to see me he can have a 54R key chain float too. Dawg

What a neat idea! And thanks for the offer. Actually I usually come off the San Joaquin Channel at the mouth of False River. I don't know the number [my charts are on the boat], but it is a Green buoy. Thanks so much for the offer! That is awfully nice of you.

I talked to a tug captain yesterday that works here in the Bay Area. That "SF" buoy I see on my Garmin Mapsource BlueChart software 12 miles west of the Golden Gate is really out there and where the pilots board ships entering the Bay. He said it a huge buoy with its own generator and it is white and red like a mid channel marker.

I unlocked Washington to Northern California on my Mapsource software so I can't see the LA buoy and I can't find the NOAA raster chart that shows it so the Boat Builder Rendezvous guests coming up from LA may get an SF buoy key chain float. On the LA harbor chart I see separate pilot operating area approaches for Los Angeles and Long Beach so they must each have their own buoy. Does anyone know the correct chart number showing the outer marker buoy for LA?

I only have 6 stained white buoys I will burn "SF" into them and go buy some more lighthouses and buoy stock when I find the LA buoy. Below is a picture of the buoys drying after staining yesterday. That Mixol tint base is insoluble in paint thinner but very soluble in warm water so I had to get the buoys wet.

I'll give the buoys a light sanding and some clear lacquer after they have had a week to dry.

TowCapt, did you get your buoy key chain float that I gave one of your guys yesterday? I used mine for the 1st time yesterday and the square knot came undone. It needs what we call a field change management work order (FCMWO) - try and overhand knot or replace the nylon cord with a leather shoe string. I had a great time yesterday, took on 4.7 gallons of fresh fuel for Pegasus (her capacity is 6.2 gallons), and took a friend from Sugar Barge over to Mildred beach way point. We cruised 24-26 mph and used about 0.7 gallons total. It was nice albeit a bit cold. I had complete piece of mind with that new Fresh Water Unlimited towing card in my pocket, thanks again for the heads up on that. Delta Dawg

I did get those floats. Thank You. It was very thoughtfull!!

We have 10 handcrafted boats coming Sunday 4 May. If you are a boat builder or prospective boat builder the best time to see the boats at the Sugar Barge docks will be 10a-12p, we are taking off on a cruise in the afternoon. I have 104 red and green can buoy key chain floats to give away to prospective boat builders.

Dawg, I'm planning to stop by on Sunday. I'm going to do my best to arrive before take off on your cruise! See ya!

I stopped by SB and saw the very pretty and unique boats on display. Got to meet DeltaDawg! What a guy. It was a very nice showing and they even had a gal from Glen-L who was promoting their products. Nice bunch of people!

Hey, thanks for the great pictures! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun on the water!!!!!

I got my July Yachtsman is the mail last night.

Bill Wells did a nice write up of the 4 May Rendezvous at Sugar Barge on page 24 of the July San Francisco Bay & Delta Yachtsman. There is a nice picture of Dwain's and Rich's boats, Bill mentions his experiences skiing behind a Glen-L boat as a kid, he wrote about the 1964 catalog Gayle gave him autographed by Glen and he says he is going to use the Tiki I gave him for a ships figure head on his boat. Bill also wrote about our friend Flutterby. It is nice to have a write up promoting our boat building passion on newstands and in Marinas for this 4 of July weekend as people enjoy the delta. When the online version is uploaded it will be at this URL http://www.yachtsmanmagazine.com/

Thanks for the update DD! You just never know when something like this will be mentioned or not.

I think Bill is doing a great job writing about the Delta! I like his historical perspective; something which only comes with a lot of years in the Delta.
