I'm trying to plan my trips ahead this coming season (what a concept!). Am thinking of going to Catskills, possibly Albany, and defintely out to the Sound, from the Stony Point area. The Catskills and the Sound I thought I could make long weekends (3 - 4 day round-trips), and Albany would be the "long cruise".

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do and see in the areas? I've ordered some cruising guides, but I'd rather hear from the "experienced" people on the board.

Not much to do in Albany, although it is a beautiful ride. We usually go as far as Kingston or Catskill. There is usually good info in Boating on the Hudson.

Now the Sound is another story altogether. It can be as flat as a pond or rough as hell, so you gotta constantly be aware of the weather, especially winds. They say "west is best". Get the Embassy guide.

For 3 - 4 days, I'd go as far as Port Jeff, although on weekends it's tough to get a slip. Danforth's is pretty much the only game out there. I read somewhere that they are cutting back on moorings out there, so it can be tough getting one in the sandhole. You could go to Norwalk, Oyster Bay, Huntington Harbor.

Are you looking to anchor or stay at a marina?

Once you look at the guide and have a better idea of where you'd like to go, we can give you much more specific first hand info.

I am going where Mike goes.

"Nice Fit" if you ask me. :)

For us Albany is merely a waypoint we pass through for either of the canal systems. Think Jersey instead?

Its funny, another friend of mine was hell bent on going to Albany as a destination. I kept asking him what for - he said that Albany Yacht Club was a nice place and he had a blast there. FWIW - I've never been there...

Anyone heading up the Hudson needs to check into the cruising options on the three creeks - Rondout, Esopus, and Catskill...

We've never stayed there (AYC) but we have stayed at others along the upper Hudson when they had a shin-dig, everyone of them was a blast. Ravina Coeymann's Yacht Club, Saugertees, and Kingston Power all do a great job at their bashes if you can get in and those would be good justification for the ride.

Hogan, hadn't gotten that far, though it's likely the Admiral would prefer a slip to a mooring. That makes it chancy (I'm sure people already have made reservations), so I'll pick up the the Embassy guide to firm up the ideas. Oyster Bay would be nice.

As for the "albany or bust", just a working idea thus far. Can't really do a two week cruise, which is what a cruise through the canals would entail, but do have friends and family up in the area, so that's another "pencil in".

Being a mid-Jersey boy, it's always possible, but really tough to justify the gas to go someplace like the shore by boat -- a car just winds up being alot easier. Maybe AC, but we'll see.

George, forget about a slip in Oyster Bay, only one marina and all they offer is moorings. Look at Huntington Harbor, Norwalk, Milford...

The Channel Club in Monmouth Beach. Very easy to get to, just off lower NY Bay. We went there once this year and we can't wait to go back. Two blocks to the beach.

If we still have the boat we are thinking of trying the Channel Club. Would like to go back to Block Island (if we find running mates) and maybe South Jersey shore.

Kingston probably in the end of June for the Fireworks. Numerous trips to a very far place that is enchanting as well called Croton On The Hudson. And maybe a few stops and the mysterious Bowline.

I'm planning on being in Kingston for the 4th -- the fireworks were great lasat year -- maybe we'll see you there this year!

Where did you stay? We usually stay at the Rondout Yacht Basin. Boatbum keeps his boat there too.

Yup. That would be our hang. Stop by and say hi. There could be a marguerita in it. But if you want a GREAT show, get into the Kgn. town docks as close as you can to the ramp. Generally speaking you will be right under all the fireworks!
But the view from RYB is great. Make sure you leave monday open so you can travel home after watching the show. Alot of people leave on Sunday and miss out.

Stayed down by the Maritime Museum -- they had some initial issues making sure everyone had water and power, but they wree *really* nice. Had front-row seats to the fireworks (nice because it was raining) Plus it's right next to the Steel House -- had the admiral's family up from Florida and we all had a great time! Can't wait to do it again!

We are also coming up to rondout after july 4th... I think we get there sunday for the week....

Boatbum whast the guys name tha tworks the tiki bar.... great guy....

We've got Bowline penciled in for July 4 ourselves. Will be looking for the HRCC flotilla.

As for the Sound, Norwalk is nice and not too far. Nice visitors dock which I understand now has water and electric. Alot of food choices and an aquarium if you have kids.

We like Milford but there really isn't anything to do there unless one of the craft fairs, lobsterfest or oysterfest are going on. Nice little town with good places to eat and alot of peace and quiet.

Mark, we're normally out east the first two weeks in July.

Caryl-D (Butch) and the crew from B dock are usually there for the fireworks. He's been known to house wandering RO's (Al Prisco)in my slip when I'm away! As long as he's around, I'm sure he'd be glad to show you the way in and show you HRCC hospitality.

So far we are planning on Bowline. Kind of like a tradition for us. Should be the entire weekend raftup. Always welcome to join the group. And who knows if we get chased out due to weather we may find an empty slip for you....
