Is that bonn fire gonna be lit tonight ? or was it already ? You and Hogan had it for different nights .

Will burn till midnight tomorrow.

I wont be able to get out, dont think the boat will move other than to pump out..

I use the same size rating for the stern as i do for the bow although some will use a size smaller in the stern. My feeling is that if the wind switches then it needs to hold as much weight if not more than bow anchor given the flat surfaces of the sterns that act as sails.

Two primary ways to set out a stern and I'm not going to do a step by step in terms of how to set the hook in the bottom as I'll assume one knows how to do that with bow anchor and I'm just too lazy to type it out.

1) Set bow anchor properly and then let out twice your normal scope as you back away from the bow anchor slowly. Drop the stern anchor and then winch/motor back up to the proper location from the initial set. So if normal scope length is 100' than let out another 100' for a 200' total, drop stern and then reduce forward scope back to 100'

or

2) Set bow anchor properly and then use a dinghy to place stern anchor back behind your boat.

HOGAN and Jonathan recommended an FX-7 years ago. I still have it and it works great as a stern. It's a very light weight anchor. I scored one on e-bay in a bag with about 6' of chain for $100 a while back. I really like the setup!

Great, thanks guys. going to check one out on the web. I usually raft up with guys of equal or smaller size, and no one uses a stern. so i figure i'll be the responsible one.

What Rommer said.. If you have a dingy then it is the best way to set and pull a stern anchor..
 
Depending on how many boats are rafted, you will need more than one stern. Remember, when the tide changes, the stern anchor becomes the 'bow anchor'.

When you don't swing with the tide/current/wind, there is much more pressure on the anchor, such as when one or all of the above are hitting you broadside.
 
Rommer and Hogan are right and gave good tips , always have two anchors aboard just in case of an emergency like a breakdown you may need one to hold you put so you don't drift into danger or the channel in front of commercial traffic ( tug & barge) for example.

Also a good idea to have a heavy sucker for a backup in a storm if you need it & you may not need two stern anchors like Hogan said if its heavy enough , plus have plenty of rope for scope in deep water in an emergency it's the only E-BRAKE you have if you get in trouble or break down you never know how deep it's gonna be . Line and a big 2nd hook is cheap insurance for your life and loved ones be safe not sorry good luck aperino .

That picture was taken during one of her two tours in Iraq. Rex is a bomb sniffing dog. On her second tour, she almost got killed when a bomb was detonated and then she came under heavy sniper fire. Thank God she got out safely and is now back home.
 
Glad to hear she is safely back home . I cannot even think of the words to describe my gratitude for fine young people (MARINES) like her who defend our freedoms everyday. But I know the pride she must feel that no job or college degree can ever give . I thank her from the bottom of my heart for the outstanding sacrafice she has made to protect thoes Americans or others who cannot protect themselfs.
