We are considering a new suv. At this time new models are arriving so both lst years and the new ones are available.

I have always bought the latest but wondered what the opinion of the BE experts on buying a leftover vs latest model.

Depends on the options you want, styling changes desired, and, of course, price out the door.

Better get one of each to avoid all that awkward second-guessing.

Of course, if you put the purchase off for another year or 2 you can feed the boat for most of another season.

Much better negotiating leverage on 2017's but feel-good factor is usually better with "next year's" model this year with possible new gizmo features you never knew you wanted.....

Unless you order a custom build, it may come down to just finding an available color you really like best and can live with every day for years, on either yr model. Happy shopping !

To me it would all depend upon whether or not the manufacturer is making any significant changes. For example there is a very big difference between the 2016/2017 GMC Acadia and the redesigned 2017 Acadia. It goes from a real 3 seat vehicle to a pretend 3 seat just like the Acura MDX.

I try not to be a Cynic, but I AM a Skeptic, and I smell "conspiracty" here.

Want to carry more than 4-5 people? Well, you need our Tahoe/Expedition/Escalade.

Want to tow somethng? Well, you need our full sized pickup.

Son just bought a car in Germany. Toyota "Corolla" that has a Diesel, Six Speed Manual, Navigation, and Seats for Seven. Guess the automotive gods don't think we need that flexibility here.

No idea of what you are trying to say.

You're likely to be able to make a good deal on last year's model. In the interest of saving money, that's what I'd focus on.

Personally I try to buy program cars and/or lease returns myself. Would rather let someone else take the big depreciation hit when they drive it off the lot, and then I'll buy it a few years later when it's still got lots of life left. Of course, they don't have that "new car smell" anymore when you do that...

Did that in February. 2015 Equinox with 15K miles on it. Still had 18 months left on the bumper to bumper warranty. The car was (and is) immaculate. Absolutely could not tell that it wasn't brand new. 2/3 the price of a new one with the same options. Downside is that I had to accept a 'second-choice' color and set of options.

You also want to look at the newest model in case it's been redesigned. The 2018 Equinox and (GMC) Terrain have been completely redesigned. For my purposes, they went in the wrong direction.

Good point.

Last year we picked up a 2013 Cadillac SRX for my wife that only had 10,600 miles on it. Got them to certify it so had 4 years of bumper to bumper warranty.

The car she had before that was one year old also out of a lease program and only had 900 miles on it when she got it.
