Have an '81 3007 and have always had marina replace my oil filters on the Crusaders.I'd now like to do my own repairs. As i see it, one has to be double-jointed to reach the starboard filter, as it is under the salon floor, and just forward of the aft-cabin bulkhead. I can't even see it with the engine covers off. Anyone had success with such an operation?

I have PCM 302 Ford engines in my 1982 3007 Aft Cabin and it is the Port side that I change the filter by feel. However, the filters are near the front of the block on the Ford's instead of the rear, so it is easier to reach. Wow, I looked at the Chevy set up in the Carver manual and I see how difficult it is to reach that area. I assume you have pulled the small floor panel in front of the steps for access. When I replaced my exhaust manifolds and risers, I pulled up all of the floor panels that would come up for better access.

Thanks for the response. Didn't realize there was a floor panel in front of the stairs. I was going to install deck plates so I could reach the filters (& transmissions...they're hard to reach also). I'll investigate this next weekend, even though I've installed new carpet. It seems the access floorboards are great for installing plugs & general engine work, however, they don't expose everything for routine service.

On my boat, I have two small floor panels that lift for access to the transmission areas. The one panel that is under the main companion way step is accessed by lifting the last step (or first step depending on where you are); the step is hinged and the sides and riser are attached together as a unit and moves out of the way,,,that is where my fuel tank selector switches are located. The other small floor panel is in front of the steps leading down into the aft cabin. I close the bifold door to pull this panel.
Good Luck.

For what it's worth, Carver gets very creative in putting bilge access hatches in places you would never think of.
There are probably more bilge openings than you think in your boat.

Gosh...I like this site! Couldn't find anything in the owners manual that indicated these panels. Thanks an awful lot for the advice. When I bought the boat 6 years ago, I never asked about these with the previous owner because I didn't think there was an issue. He has since died, so I'm left to my own devices.

Just discovered another reason I had no idea about the access hatches to change oil/transmission filters/fluid, is that previous owner put in new carpet and carpeted right over the hatches. That explains why the marina charged me an arm & a leg (I call them 'boating units' 1=$100)for service. By the way...saying it costs 2 boating units sounds a whole lot less than $200! Thanks again for all the replies.

I did not realize the hatches were there until I was replacing the aft bilge pump discharge line thru hull and raised up under the small one in front of the aft cabin stairs and it lifted....good thing I found it as it helped keep me from trying to levitate while removing the old thru hull.

Just want to say thanks for all the advice. This weekend I searched for the access hatches without success. Nothing there but a solid floor. Here's a few scenarios: 1. Those that do have them, perhaps were installed by a previous owner. 2. Carver forgot to install mine when they made the boat. 3. My previous owner replaced the floor and never installed the hatches. In any event, I dislocated my shoulder & was able to reach both the filters for replacement. I figure the emergency room visit will be less expensive then what my local marina would charge me & I might be able to get a 'frequent patient' discount when I change the fileters next spring! Seriously....I DO appreciate the feedback.

Try lifting the steps from the bottom and see if there"s ANY movement there. If there is....the Hatch is there.

Thanks....tried that. Even crawled in the bilge behind the motors & visually looked at the salon floor. Solid floor the entire distance. Has me puzzled! In any event, I continue with what I was able to do & not worry about it. Appreciate everyones help.
