New member, new(to me)Carver owner, & my first post. I've enjoyed this forum & many threads thru-out our frozen winter. Purchased our Carver in December, can't wait til it hits the water late April, get thru our lock system and into Georgian Bay, Ontario our home waters. Being of sizeable mass, :) & 6'5", my concern is the width/size of the forward berth bed. It almost works for my wife and I but is a little tight. I'd prefer not to have sleep in seperate berths if possible. In one of the threads here, I came across a picture of what I thought looked like an additional cushion added to fill the small 'vee' space between the dresser/cabinet and edge of bed platform. In fact, it may have been 'Starri-night' archive pictures where I found it. Has anyone else done this, and how has it worked out? Any other pics/suggestions from anyone?

Thx, in advance for any replies!

Scott.

Scott,

It was, most likely, a photo of (the former) Starry Night. I purchased the boat from Bob (The owner of the current/new Starry Night and it came with that setup.

He took some plywood and put it under the mattress over to the storage area and had a separate mattress made for that triangle section.

If you don't have the same depth of mattress, the one I have would not work for you, but I don't use mine. I prefer to have the area for standing/sitting as well as access to the cabinets below.

I know he spent a ton of money on these two pieces as well as the mid cabin mattress, but I am not married to them. Mattresses are subjective and I don't find them to be very comfortable personally. If I ever get around to figuring out a new mattress setup, I will let you know. The current filler piece has sat in my basement since I bought the boat in the fall of '09.

What do you have now and where exactly are you located?

wow, what a great forum, such quick response!

Actually, I knew the boat had changed hands, and ultimately it was you I was hoping to reach!

I figured it was a custom piece of ply and cushion...I expect to have to do the same with mine when I get it, (which I'm fine with). I'm hoping if it lifts in and out relatively easily, I can keep the access to the cabinets intact.

You don't use yours...hmm. Do you sleep single or double in that berth? I think the brochures for that year happen to quote that berth as 48" wide. And are you postioned feet-to-bow, or feet-to stern?

The boat I've purchased is a '88 3257 Montego. I live in the greater Toronto area, and boat in Georgian Bay. The boat is currently out of the water in a covered slip in Barrie, Ontario, and we will take it north thru our Trent-Severn Waterway system to our current marina in Twelve Mile Bay, once the locks open May24th weekend.

We have yet to have a hull survey, sea trial or engine(s) inspection, and the sale is conditional on all these items. The current owner has had her for 6 years and taken really good care of her. She has twin 7.4's, gen-set, heat/air etc., and many upgrades. We paid $35,000.

I generally sleep with my head forward and feet aft. Most nights it is just me and two medium sized labs. If there is a guest, the dogs do just fine in the mid cabin. I have a flat screen mounted on the wall above the hanging closet and it works pretty well. I am 6'2" and tip the scales around 250 in the summer so I am not tiny either.

If I used the platform, it would be relatively easy to remove although not something I would want to do constantly. The mattresses the previous owner had custom made are extremely heavy so moving mattresses is a bit cumbersome. In the forward berth it is welcome though since these boats are so damn ass heavy.

I think you will like the boat. I know I sure do. I am in the middle of some cabin modifications and will try to get some photo's up some day. I have not decided if it will float this year or not, depends on how much I get done on the boat and my house.

Best of luck with yours. Let's see some pictures!

Glad to hear there are several other 3257s out there. We have had our's for 18 months and we really enjoy it. We stepped up from a 2557 and there really is a lot of extra room. We recently completed a modification to the bench seat across the back that you would have to step on to get in the cockpit. We reupholstered the seat and took out the middle part of the cushion and put a piece of carpet in it's place, it really works well and cost just a little more than having the old material re sown. Good To Go

Be great to see a picture of what you're describing. I have a feeling we may end up re-making the rear bench across the back to get a little extra depth & I'm contemplating making some type of removable or sliding storage boxes for underneath - our previous boat (Chrissy 253) had this. Access to the hatches will obv. have to factor into the design.

As mentioned, we haven't taken possesion of our boat yet, so these are all just ideas for now. Can't wait to get aboard and figure things out!

We will post some picture soon. It makes boarding a lot easier especially after a long day of boating. We found some clear storage bins that fit right under the rear bench seat. We are able to store stuff under there and don't have to worry about it going all over the place. I know you are excited about taking delivery, when do expec to do that?

Well...Ice off the bay (Lake Simcoe) completely by mid-April, I guess. Then survey, then Sea trial...and the deal becomes firm, provided no hang-ups or problems.

Turns out we can't make the trip north to our home marina until our lock-system opens on our May 24th holiday weekend. I'm guessing its about a 50-ish mile trip, only 4 locks or so at the top of the Trent-Severn Waterway, then into Georgian Bay.

The plastic bins are a possible answer to under seat storage issue - maybe with something to secure them to the floor or deck side of the transom

I shouldn't complain about the wait to get the 3257 home, I've got two boats to sell this spring! The CC 253 and Sea Ray.

If any of you are looking for a spare set of 3 blade props I have a set I am looking to sell. They came from our Montego. I believe they are 18 x 22.
I also have a brand new in box Ocean Air screen/shade for the smaller hatch in the galley or head.

I may be interested in both, not sure if my boat will come with anything like that, either included or avail from the current owner.
I have looked at the Ocean Air screen/shades online, and thought they'd be nice to have.
I'd be curious to know your numbers ($) on these items.

Bob,

What do you want for the screen/shade? Would like to add one to the galley like you did for the head. Also, are the Props the same as I I have on there now, assuming Joel didn't change them while he owned (read: neglected) the boat?

Thanks,

Jim
