I am looking to buy a used 380 Santego that needs a lot of work. Port engine is frozen, starboard transmission needs work, steering is frozen, generator needs water pump, and other small things. Knowing all of this, is a sea trail still necessary? Is there any other way to check the drive train for vibrations? I can't afford to spend 50-60K on a boat, but if I can get this one running for $35K, I would be happy. Is this realistic?

I don't think it's realistic unless you have a spare hundred hours and more than 35k. My own personal experience tells me look for another boat one that can be sea trialed. There are many 31-38 foot (running condition) gas boats that are selling for $25 to 45k in this market. Shop around otherwise you will end up very disappointed. With the problems you are describing it seems you are getting into a boat that was either sunk or severly neglected in either case you don't want to buy a boat in this condition. Look at some of the 31 foot Mainship Sedan Bridges or if it's a Trawler you want look at the 34 older single screw diesel trawlers. If you want a go fast I can't give you any suggestions. Good luck in your search for the right boat.

Thanks for the sound advice. I instinctively knew that. You mentioned plenty of boats available in the $25K - $45K ranage. I guess I need to start making offers on boats that are asking $50K to $90K.

Good advice Bill!

I have to agree, there are a good number of boats out there in this value range. Also a good marine surveyor will keep you out of trouble.

There are a large number of well equipped cruisers and older trawlers in this price range. I would look on Yachtworld.com. I can see why you like the Santego but I have to tell you the 35 Mainship Mediteranean or the 31 Sedan Bridge are very similar (interiors). These can be had mostly with gas engines but diesels are available in a few. Start with YachtWorld where you can enter your price range and boat style and see what is out there. I have totally rebuilt my 40 Mainship Sedan Bridge from top to bottom and when you 1st start you think it's only 20k here and there before I knew it I was over 300k, yes on a boat that I would be very lucky to get $100k in this economy. The deals are there once you think you have found one post it here and you will get honest opinions. Bill
