I read an interesting article in the Herald this morning. A guy had a boat accident on the Dania Canal and he is now on life support. They “believe" alcohol may be the cause. Duh! His alcohol level was twice the legal limit and he was twice convicted of DUI in the past.

What I really find interesting is that they say the guy was doing 50 miles per hour on the Dania Canal, right before the little bridge of Griffin Road. This is a bridge that is dangerous to go under on idle. How he managed to get to 50 mph on his 1979 Aquasport in Dania Canal is a mistery to me.

Obviously he won't be doing it anymore! Darwin prevails again!

you read the story in the paper ... need i say more ? :-)

Well there's enough running room east and west of the bridge to pickup that speed. Just imagine the wake he caused to the live-aboarders next to the bridge. There must be at least 15 there.

I think the bridge he hit was the one at 441 and Griffin and the spillway is less than 100 yards west of the bridge. The news said he hit the bank, maybe he saw the bridge and tried to avoid it. I don't think any boats are allowed past of it because of the spillway. Very low bridge I think only a john boat can get under it anyway. Also it is a nowake zone as is all of the Dania Cut Off Canal. The last time I was up there in the dinghy there was one of those yellow booms across the canal just east of the bridge. The canal is also very high right now the water has been over the seawall and up about 3 feet in my yard at high tide. Guess I won't have to worry about him waking my boat for quite a while.

It was reported today that the person died from his injuries.

I have gone exploring this way twice on my boat now. Just makes me wonder, what if I was on my boat at 8 PM on the canal heading back to my marina and this person was heading towards me at 50 MPH. rb2@gr5t#$% I'm glad no innocent bystander got injured on this incident.

I have been going almost every weekend though the Dania Canal for the past 5 years, and I rarely see anybody going on plane. Once in a while, a little dinghy going fast, but most people respect the area, especially because it's so narrow in most of the areas. This Evel Knivel was the exception. Thank God!
I feel sorry for the members of his family, I know it may sound morbid but I have to admit that when I read that he did not survive, the first thing that came to my mind was that he would not like the speed of his funeral procession.
