Letting people in the water with the engines running was never a situation I wanted to be in. Clutches drag, all sorts of issues.

Reading this I think a 8 year sentence is getting off too easy! The victim lost much more than that. Having been on a fewof these cattle boats I've seen some very good and very involved captains and I've seen a could who seem to be detached and uninterested in doing anything other than getting paid and the trip overwith.

The problem is with the law. "Seaman's manslaughter" is as old as sailing ships and it was a way to protect Captains from capricious prosecutions in the old days of "Shanghai". Sort of like the law limiting liability to cargo on board. It may be out dated.

I remember that accident. Crazy. Engines should be shut down before anyone is allowed in the water!
