Hi Folks,

This has probably been asked... I was thinking of taking SEA BELLA up the Napa River this weekend. Something I have never done, including in a smaller boat.

Can I get an 85' up the river?

If the marina does not have space, are there areas to anchor?

Any hazards based on local knowledge?

My wife and I are experienced, having cruised 7,000 miles in 18 months. Not a boast, just to provide a reference point for the purpose of this post.

Thanks!

Charles

Not much knowledge here, but I cruised it once and remember some pretty shallow areas.

Charles your right, it has been asked, and it was asked by me. I asked to take the Sea Bella up the Napa River and you said no.

So I'm not telling you where the old underwater breakwater is and the abandoned mooring field and all my secrets about somewhere I have never been in your boat.

I hope you will reconsider next time.

There's a cruise ship that runs up the Napa river so you can probably make it.

Try to find the cruise line that runs it and see if they will give you route/way points.

Are you going to the Napa Marina or the Napa Yacht Club? I don't think the yacht club has the space for a 85. I have taken the 36 into the yacht club with no problems. I did see some areas that showed 4 feet under the keel. (3 ft draft)If you are going to the marina, I don't think you will have any problems.
I would ask for some local knowledge concerning the channel markers.

Thanks for the responses.

From my reading, it sounds fairly tricky getting to the Napa Yacht Club (I do have a call into them to check for space). In the Bahamas, and parts of Canada, my wife would run the tender in front of the boat to check depth and obstructions. Napa Marina advises to enter the marina at high tide...

Generally speaking, you'll have to keep to the WEST side of the river going north and the SOUTH side going west...after the high overpass over the river up to where the houses begin and the river narrows. I haven't gone much further than that area as I know someone that lives along the river there.

Take a look at google earth. It may show the channel.

Great trip up to Napa! The cruise up and back was a piece-of-cake. Moored at the Napa Valley Yacht Club. Very helpful and friendly. The location is good too, since it is just half-a-mile to the Riverwalk area. With our bikes we were able to tour Silverado Trail too. Highly recommend it if you haven't made the trip. You could probably take a 100' up there (depending on its draft of course)!

If your looking for great cruises up that way don't forget a trip to Petaluma or a trip to Suisun City, both very accessible from the bay and both have downtown guest docking. Beautiful cruise up both rivers, generally plenty of water under the boat. If you liked the movie American Grafitti, you will like Petaluma where they filmed it and they have pamphlets to show where all the great scenes were filmed, all within walking distance from the docks.....fun place,

I didn't know that American Graffiti was filmed in Petaluma.

I cruised up there a few years ago in a smaller boat, but didn't go through the bridge to the basin. What is the clearance and width of that bridge??

The bridge does not offer great clearance but they have a full time bridge tender that will open for you. You call a number on the bridge and a city worker comes out in short order and raises it. The turning basin has great docking and it right in the middle of Petaluma which has a bunch of stuff to see and do. Grafitti was filmed there in 1972 and 90 percent was filmed in downtown Petaluma. They still have, I think, a yearly American Grafitti festival and some of the stars of the movie come back for it.. One of my favorite movies of all time and lots of fun to see the places they filmed some of the famous scenes.

A cruise to Petaluma was on my bucket list for years. Now, I guess that cruise bucket is empty.
