Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone might know who the OEM would have been for the abovementioned boat's seats-- They're due for replacement in my Sea Ray. The plywood frames are rotting out and spitting out small chunks of wood all over the deck everytime somebody sits down!

The stock back to back seats I see available online are all a bit narrower than the original seats, and usually a different height. I still have to check with a local Sea Ray dealer, if only for laughs, on what they would charge for replacements. The thing is it's still a 20 year old boat; so I don't want to go haywire with the refurb.

That said, does anyone in this size boat have experience with a marine upholstery guy doing a restoration? In other words, I could spend 300 bucks on the butt slimming 'lounge' seats out of Overtons or whatever; but would I be able to get the seats, gunwale upholstery and engine cover cushion all redone professionally for say 800-$1000 with the right marine interior company?

All comments (even sarcastic ones) or experiences, would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

B&M makes a plastic base pontoon seat with armrest. They fit just right. Other brands are too high. I use two of these together to form an L or facing each other for conversation. I cut one down so it is not as long as the other. Works great. Storage in base. Can almost lie down on them. Most important, your knees are in your chin and you have back support. As for the helm, a recover is going to cost. If the wood is rotted, a simple base can be made using the original as a pattern and then make padding. Either that or the front seat off a 65 Buick or the like.

I'd look at it and decide what it will do to the resale. If I go with replacements for $1,000 that will probably make it easier to sell. We looked at an 87 250 where someone had pulled the drivers seat and put something else in. We knew what the original looked like and what he did was absolutely cheap and crappy. It looked like a cut down church pew with pads! My thought was this, if he is too cheap to do it right, what other short cuts has he taken with maintenance on the boat? On the other hand, if you are talking about a boat that is only worth a few thousand, then why double the value with a nice seat?? I haven't seen your boat, so I can't make the call. You will have to do it based on what you think it right and based on how long you may keep it.

I'd look around, even on ebay and you might find some wider seats that will work. You might even find a salvage boat yard somewhere that has some seats that will drop right in? I know, one can dream right?

Good luck and keep us posted! I might be in the situation someday!

Joe,

I'm a new member. Was going through some old topics and saw your questions about replacement seating for your `89 23'CC. I have an `89 Weekender and am trying to figure out how to best replace my passenger and pilot helms. Mine are matching sleeper seats on wood bases, both in need of replacement. Heavy as hell and they take up the whole deck area. How did you fix your problem? I'm using 30' high folding director chairs until I can come up with a better solution. Trouble is, my wife keeps tumbling over every time we hit rough water. This can't go on much longer. Someone help?
