Ever since purchasing the boat 5 yrs ago, I've noticed that each prop shaft has a bronze 'donut' held by a set screw and positioned about 12" aft of the hull opening. It's about 1/4-3/8" wide and fits over the prop shaft.

Does anyone know what purpose they serve?

Just replaced my stbd stuffing box, and in the process of re-assembly, we forgot to put the donut on before inserting the shaft through the hull and connecting everything up.

Unless there is a major need for this item, I'd like to treat it like my gall bladder- don't even know it's missing.

I suspect it is a stop in case the prop shaft pulls from the coupler. However I've never seen one personally. Or could it be for harmonics? Curious myself now...

Just got the answer from Sea Ray. It is used to dampen vibrations. If there are no perceived vibrations without the collar, it's not really necessary.

If I have to put it back on, more inclined to do it from the back end. Take off the prop and cutlass bearing, rather than have to pull the whole thing out and start over. My mechanic would shoot me.....
