A great week on the Delta

I had a great week on the Delta, managing to anchor out for six of the last nine nights.

The Hilton fireworks were the best I've seen. The pyrotechnic assortment seemed pretty fresh and the finale was the best.

Overall boat numbers must have been smaller than previous years, owing to the Fourth falling on a Wednesday. There didn't seem to be as much general boat traffic. I didn't actually make it to Mandeville & Three River Reach this year, though.

Living through the heat without air conditioning was fun. A Delta Dip every hour or so during the afternoon kept my body temp down. I'd hit the water as soon as the shorts dried out. We saw 105 degrees for two days where we were anchored out. Stockton hit 110 and Sacramento 108!

It got so hot that the spiders hiding in the crannies and folds the cockpit canvas dropped to the deck looking for relief. They only found death from my deck rag.

Here's how to keep ice for five 90-something to 105 degree days in an ordinary red-colored Igloo cooler... keep it covered with wet white towels. I had to wet it down every four hours or so during the day. The evaporative cooling kept the outside of the cooler cold to the touch.

I finished transforming the transom from white paint to stain and varnish on June 30. The kids came up with the boat name 10 years ago soon after I bought it. There has been no name on the boat until now.

Later that day the sailboat raft-up dragged anchor and came within 20' of the bow. I woke up the snoozing crews with the horn. I'll give the sailboaters credit for doing a good drill: they had two motors on within a minute and avoided making contact with my boat and anchor chain.

At night, the Delta breeze and stars were outstanding. Saturn, Jupiter and the late-rising orange moon were quite a sight. Wish I had shots of those, but I didn't think of it at the time.

Thanks so much for posting!!! It sounds like you had a wonderful time. Your ice chest idea is a great one! And I'm so glad you did not get tangled up in that raft up. What a mess that would have been!

Thanks Flutter. It was a very enjoyable vacation on the water. The couple of days where the wind blew 35 MPH gusts required a little extra care, but it was all good.

Another impression I got during the week must have been related to fuel prices. It seemed like a lot more cruisers were running at displacement speeds, regardless of water conditions. I didn't get overtaken and passed by a single cruiser during the entire week. The cruisers were all just plowing along at aboat the same dispacement speed, same as our boat. That could have been a coincidence, but it seemed odd and never happened with us before.

Glad you had a good time. We also were out from Saturday to Friday. The week was pretty good with the evenings cooling off really nice. But, thurs was a hot one and friday looked to be hot so we decided to go home a day early. I don't have air on my boat either. The dip in the water was the key.

We anchored out at Mandeville on the 4th. I thought the fireworks were better this year as well. One guy in a dingy pulling up his stern anchor floated by us and said he heard that Hilton's grandson wasn't impressed last year so they increased the budget for this year. Funny how that works.

Can't wait to go back up, maybe in late sept or oct.

Give us a holler next time you plan to be up! Oct is one of my favorite months in the delta. Usually the hot, hot days are over, there is still plenty of daylight and sometimes an early storm comes blowing in to make things a little more exciting! Nothing like being on the hook with some fresh smelling rain tapping on the hull!

You know it's hot when Herman & Helen's runs out of ice. That happened on the Fourth and a lot of folks had to make a longer dink ride up to Korth's to get the cold stuff.

Patrick: About a half an hour after the fireworks someone turned on very bright searchlight, aiming it low and out to the N-NE. Did you see that? It was turned on for about 20-30 minutes. We're guessing it came from somewhere near Mandeville Tip and was either some sort of law enforcement operation or some lighting was needed to put away the fireworks equipment. A bunch of us were pondering that issue after the show.

yzer,

We were anchored north of the river at Mandeville by the levee. I did see the bright light as you mention. A couple of larger boats blocked our view but I think it might have been the barrage they were moving out. The light was up quite high and unless it was on a sailboat mast I think it could only have been the barrage. With the light it was difficult to make out all the details. It took all my night vision away.
