A Pi$$ed off end to a good boating weekend.

Or ebay!
One time there was stuff stolen from boats.
I found the exact unit on ebay, sent a link to the guy and he looked at the pic and said that is my unit!
We then turned it over to Nassau detectives who went to the guy's home after he gave us his address.

Brad,
Lets bait a trap.... I have some new ammo i want to try out.

Rob

Rob......maybe you can try it on the guys fishin by the bridges ?............... :)

Make a police report. You'd be surprised at how good they are at lifting prints. It takes a while to get them (the print results) back if they lift anything, but its worth a shot.
It might be a garage, but it still counts as a burglary in the people's republic of NY. The police are probably concerned with stats, so make sure they write it up as a burglary and you'll get a response.
I'll bet that of they got your garage there has probably been, or will be, a series of garage burglaries happening in your area.

I would have never of thought the police would do this for a home burglary. I could see it if there has been a rash of burglaries.
Good advise

I'm not sure what Nassau and Suffolk do, but NYPD has been doing it for as many years as I can remember. I'd be surprised if the guys on the Island weren't doing it now too with all the pressure to keep crime numbers down.
If they weren't interested in lifting prints, then I'd almost bet that it was recorded as a larceny of some sort, or criminal mischief, and not a burglary.

Insurance is your only relief, the cops have probably already filed away your case, likely never to hear from them again.

I think 2 years ago i posted that a boat at our marina was broken into. It was kids who ate stuff from the galley then helped themselves to the flat screen and some radios. All of which was caught on marina video . Police came when the boat owner called , a Report was filed. The cops never returned when the marina office was open for a copy of the tape.

Rob,
The just don't get paid enough to deal with that. :)

Thats a whole different story. We pay taxes for a police force of almost 3000 officers yet suffolk only has 2500 cops. What did Levy do with the rest of that money?? Suffolk has the same size police dept it had in the late 60's. Its all smoke and mirrors. Its only that the majority of the population are law abiding that that the whole island hasnt turned to crap.

I am shocked they didnt check for prints. Even if they never recover Brads property, the perps could be charged with Brads break in right up til the statute of limitations kicks in.

I had a car ransacked once. Crap car.I have to admit that i did feel "violated". Really bothered me that some stranger was palming thru all my Stuff. I feel for you Brad. really sucks.

Police work on L.I. is a joke! I have a break in at a house I was building, then to my astonishment the crooks came back the next night, only I was there waiting with a shotgun nearby, I told my wife to call the useless cops then hid my gun lest I get **** for it. They arested the punks and I got restitution which I certainly pumped up the dollar amount for my troubles. All ended well enough, but I wouldn't want to depend on the Nassau County cops for this work! Vigilanism works better! Feels better too!

So now there is an awkward update. Linda goes to Lowes to see about getting a piece of wood cut and buy some numbers for a new address plaque for our driveway pole. Guess why I could not cut the f-en wood. She ended up buying me a cordless jig saw, but not a Dewalt like I had, but a simple B&D. So she mentions what had happened and he said there have been a lot of people replacing tools because of theft over the last few months.

Now the jaw drop, he tells her specifically who people are suspecting and have in common. I won't mention the name of the company, but we have used them over the years and just about a month ago. I can't go around accusing and believe me I rather not let this one slide, but feel I have to and it is eating at me. [:(!]

Brad, instead of acusing, why not start a new thread of companies that you would or would not recomend others use based on your history with them? I'm sure that like others that have read your story, I would not want to have the at my home.

Can you say what kind of company without naming names? Most of us live nowhere near you so wouldn't know who you use. The concept that someone is in the neighborhood for legit reasons and leveraging it for illegit ones has my attention.

Landscapers?

Hope you called the police to tell them what you heard. And yes, you don't need to accuse anyone, but telling your local guys what type of company would be a good idea.

Walter I sent you a PM...

On another note…. I still can't e-mail using my profile e-mail. When I go to change it, I get a message that it is in use, but it is my e-mail. The one my profile has is the actual address but with #'s (123) at the end making it not valid. I am bgroener (at) Optonline (dot) Net. If you can use your moderator “Superuser” authority, I would be grateful. See you soon... But I can't say where or when because I should not post it on an open forum... ;-)

Thanks

Brad,
Got your email, and of course I won't post the company. But I think you should post the type of contractor, reason being is if anyone is looking to do that type of work, they can PM you for the heads up to make sure it is not the same contractor you suspect. No harm in that IMO my friend.

PS
Was your new hardtop on the boat installed crooked also, bad enough they stole your tools, hope the hardtop came out ok. :)

Walter good idea, but I do want to keep this low key. So here is the contractor type and some details:

I had electrical work done about 6 weeks ago, one of the items was installing an additional outlet in my Garage. I have used this local electrical company for about 16 years with no cause for suspicion. However, I rarely got the same electrician. When Linda was told what company was mentioned to the Lowes worker from other customers replacing stolen tools, the light went on.. No pun intended.

Brad,
As a business owner, and as mentioned in your PM to me, you were correct in saying "Just a bad egg maybe working for them now."

Not telling you how to handle this, but if it was my company that did work for you for 16 years, I would hope that the 16 years of good service would reward me with a heads up about your suspicion. As a business owner, my goal is to provide the best service possible for my clients, if I had a "bad egg" and you gave me a heads up, or you suspected I might have a "bad egg", you input would be more than accepted with open arms.

Unfortunately, in my 30 years of being in business, I have had something similar happen to me, fortunately, little damage was done before my loyal customers informed me. Thank God, they gave me a heads up, otherwise the little prick that was working for me at the time could have done some serious damage to everything I have built.
In my case, the tech was an outstanding technician, but what I did know, and later to figure out, he was a drug addict.

Just my 2C Brad

Tell the company what you suspect. I deal with dishonest employee stuff every once in a while. Usually I get involved when they are stealing time, goods, or services from their employer, but if they steal from the hand that feeds them they wouldn't hesitate to steal from a customer. It's more prevelant than you think.
