Folks,
We plan to head north from Viking Boat Yard the middle of the month to have the boat hauled from Alcove Marina in Schuylerville to Sacandaga.
Any good advise for a lock virgin?
Where should we stop for lunch and fuel on the way?
We do plan to cruise around 20knots or so and will be heading up on a week day.
1988 Silverton 34X

Use fenders at the rub rail and water line on both sides of the boat. That way going up, you have the rails protected, and as you come out the top of the lock the hull doesn't rub on the lock wall when the rub rail fenders are above the wall. If you have them on both sides you have less to worry about.
Pack your lunch? Any place you go for lunch will slow you down a couple of hours (imho)? UNLESS, the point in Catskill at the mouth of the Catskill creek is open that day for Lunch. Call and check.
Gloves for line handling and something to wash with in between locks. Be ready for some slime.

Once you get through one or two you will get the hang of it and hopefully enjoy it. I'd say you should get the CRUISING GUIDE TO THE NEW YORK STAE CANAL SYSTEM it's cheap and has probably every thing you need to know and then some . ( Waterford usually sells them &lots of other places too, should be easy to find if you ask around )
Have fun and enjoy your trip it's a lot of fun up there
Jon

I had heard that there is a speed limit on a good bit of the NY canal system and that they time your transit time between locks.

The speed is 10 mph. for the dug sections , just fast enough to slow down and enjoy the sites. most groups travel together & lock through together , it's for a good reason though , it's tight in alot of sections , plus they try to keep the bank erosion down , it's not for punishmemt.
I gennerally like to cruise along at around 30mph, except at night , and found hull speed enjoyable on the canal kinda slows your blood pressure down & you get into a slow pace and enjoy the canal .

Robert get ready to pay. There is a charge this year but I dont know how much.

It's pretty cheap compared to all the other stuff they hit us for and the free docking along the canals makes up for it quick, plus they keep everything pretty nice up there people have to get paid i guess tax money is alloted to for it .I buy a season pass to support them it was free for a while. don't know how big his boat is but the info is easy to find on the nys canal web site + the prices I think if you ever been there you would say it's worth every penny. Jon

Why on earth would you move a 34ft. boat to Sacandaga Reservoir?
I know it's pretty big but if you do any Boating at all you're gonna get tired of it REAL quick. I think you could probably do just about all there is to do there in less than one summer. Why not just find a Marina close by somewhere in the Canal System?

There is plenty to do and see on the Canal. If time permits, stop at the Waterford Visitors Center (its actually at the very beginning of the ERIE Canal near the signpost. And across from it, in the Champlain Canal is a dock where even a 34 footer can get in and you can walk up to a supermarket, deli, fast food and a cash machine...

Call 1-800-4CANAL4 or visit the NY State Canals web site http://www.nyscanals.gov/ for more information including Notices to Mariners, although as Gary found out, sometimes the notices are incomplete or misleading. By and large, though, they are invaluable resources...

We have had property on the lake for the last three years and had a new Aqua Patio 240LE. The wife wanted a boat with a bathroom and enough room to sleep/cook on comfortably for the weekends we spend down at Sand Island on the lake. We looked at plenty of boats and we just decided we had to have this one.
Yes, it is large for a 29mile long lake, but it fits our needs perfectly and it is by no means the largest boat on the lake.

Thank you everyone for the input and thoughts!!!

29 miles is pretty long for an inland lake but still though.......even at it's widest point I don't think that lake is anymore than 2 miles across is it? Just seems like you'd be awfully confined on that lake with a boat of that size and I know there are bigger ones there. In fact...I almost bought a Boat from someone that kept it at that lake. It was six years ago and I don't remember all the details but it seems to me that it was a Thompson and I think the only reason I didn't buy it was because it had twin 4 cylinder engines in a 29 ft. boat and I couldn't believe that it wouldn't be way under-powered.

Be careful of the dock at the begning of the chanplain canal for the price chopper supermarket Pete was talking about , when we docked there last year on the way home there was about a million shopping carts in the water off the dock there, so approach with caution around that dock . hopefully someone pulled them out by now , cause it's nice to have a supermarket with boat dock access so close... Jon

Wow! Thanks for sharing that, Jon. When we were last there, about 5 years ago (can't believe it was that long already!) it was a very nice spot, and we pulled a 37 in there with no problems. Perhaps its best to stop at the Waterford Visitors Center first and get local knowledge, or scout it out with a dinghy before moving the big boat in...

Pete, We made it on and off with no problem , but just saw a lot of carts laying on the hill where you walk up , & that made me look down behind the boat at the dock and could see quite a few carts in the water there.( may be tough to see if it's silty)
Like i said hopefully the cleaned it up, it's really cool to have a supermarket with a dock,, just don't want to see anyone wrap up a prop on one, so i'd go in easy thats all.

Who is doing your portage? I recommend Adirondack Boat Carriers out of Lake George, NY. George the owner, is very professional and know how to handle big boats. He has move my 290 Sundancer from Fort Edward on the Champlain Canel to Lake George a bunch of times. Google his phone number, it will be worth it.

Sacandaga Res. is a cool lake to hang on. Spent many an afternoon at sand island playing vollyball and fishing around the Edinburgh bridge in my late teens. But it's a resevoir. We always had the houses (my Dads, Step Brother and three Step Sister's) to go to after being on the lake all day. Unfortunately the season ends so early. By labor day the water is being lowered and that's that. We "almost" bought a camp up there about seven or eight years ago.

Good lunch spots would be Catskill Point as previously mentioned, Yanni's Three in the Athens "Side Cut", The Boat House at Shady Harbor, Yanni's Too at Coeymans Landing, "The Barge" at the Albany Waterfront, "The "Other" Barge" at the Watervliet park, Fresno's or Brown's at the Troy Docks. All are right on the water and are easy to dock, get in and get out.

Ditto what everyone else said about the locks. Be sure to switch your radio to 13 upon approach to the Federal Lock. All of the canal traffic and locks operate on channel 13.

We anchor out accross from Waterford during festivals and go to that Price Chopper quite a bit. Usually by dingy, but I have gotten my 24'er in and out of there with no problems. Only saw grocery carts in the water once and that was two years ago.

Ron, if he is going to Alcove Marina, those guys are one of the few boat haulers around here. Same name. They move huge boats. As well as my friend's boat every year and have always done a good job.

Robert, any more questions just ask! Enjoy your new boat up there. Indeed, not the largest boat up there, but it will seem small compared to the miles you can go on the river.

Hi Ken! How's it going these days? Do you plan on getting down to the Rondout this year???

Hi Pete! Doin' good! Much better than this time last year! Life is finally getting onto smoother waters for me in many ways.

Got the boat in on Memorial Day. Finally. The list of major mechanical issues was crazy this year. Did not do too much striper fishing this year, but oh well. At least we are in now.

Yes, I would love to get down to see you guys some time this year! It would be me, Ty and Barley (the dog). Possibly could talk some other boats into making the trip too.

Yep, on the champlain canal, the lock guys bust my brothers chops all the time when he goes out on his bass boat. WOT is around 55 knots so he's always getting from lock to lock in half the time he's supposed to. They never actually gave him any problems, the sheriffs are another story though.

I've been through the locks a few times now, and I guess this summer's been really slow. I was broke down in Champlain Lock 4, late Saturday afternoon over Memorial Day weekend, and he said I was the fifth boat that day! I guess last summer they had 60 boats for the whole day.

The locks keep in touch with each other, when you go through one they'll ask how far you're going, and will radio to the next one so they can drop/raise the water so it's ready when you get there. With the lack of traffic this summer, I haven't had to wait for a lock yet.

Lock passes for a 34' are $15 for a two day, $37.50 for a ten day, and $75 for the season. http://www.nyscanals.gov/exvac/boating/bctolls.html <- this site has a list of places you can buy the pass at.

Personally I think the prices are pretty fair and reasonable

Yeah, I agree - the last time I made a transit in the big boat I had to pay the fee and there are a lot worse things (and more expensive things!!!) that you can spend your money on...

I see no problem with paying for the privilege of using these fine waterways, especially as cheap as it is...

PS - Ken, keep us posted, and definitely come on down!!!
