Advise for Lock Virgin north of Albany?

THX for all the info!!!
Questions about the tides:
We want to run with the current if possible and I think I understand it now :)
If the low tide in Haverstraw is at 6:15 am on the 19th, I am heading north, I think I want to leave around 8:15 to flow with the current.
Is this correct?
When would the slack tide be?
I thought it might make sense to leave as early as we can - you know it will be a long day.
Is there a point on the river that does not change current - as in it always flows south to the Ocean?
TIA

RobertV, Interesting question...I am always searching for info on the tides in the river, it's not so simple to figure out for the most part( if you want to get techinical ), heading out like you said 2hrs after the change sounds about right, the fastest push is usually tward the end of the change.

i had an uncle who ran a tug around ny harbor & the river from the 40s to the 70s and he used to try and teach me about stuff like tides and currents in the river i wish i paid more attention to him back then. There is really quite a science to it, at times the flood can be rasing the water hieght and the current flowing out against it & vice versa.
Eldridge tide and pilot book comes out every year and has some cool diagrams of the different currents at hourly stages , but it's all the lower harbor ,and not much for the rest of the river.

i'm by no means an expert on the tides but have a wierd facanation with the currents in the river & am interested to see what ans. you get to your question.if you look on the net about it there are a few sites and one i found had times and days you can punch in for the best run with the current(but i can't remenber it). hope you get a lot of responses to your question . i always like to learn about the currents in the hudson, wished i paid more attention to the old timmers who tried to teach me stuff.
sorry for getting so long winded it's one of my favorite topics to discuss... best whishes Jon

Just wanted to add, between Locks 1 and 2, make sure you stay in the channel especially as you approach Lock 2!

That's a google maps link that'll be centered on Lock 2. All that white/grey stuff just south of the lock is underwater right now, but barely.

Same deal here, this is just a little south of Lock 2. The water right now is covering that rock 'thing' all the way up to River Rd on the east side.

It looks a lot worse than it is, but just a heads up to keep a good eye out for the buoys in that little stretch. As far as I know that's really the only "bad" spot between the start of the Champlain Canal and the Alcove Marina, but I haven't gone up that far on the river yet.

Totally useless fact, but right after passing through Lock 1 you'll pass my marina on the western side.

Also I THINK the Troy Town Dock is your last fuel stop until Alcove, in case you're getting low. There's Admiral's Marina in Stillwater just above Lock 4, but I'm not sure if they have fuel or not.
