Another Delta restaurant is gone

Great idea Flutterby!

I have the capability of putting all of my pics on disc, in fact, I purchased a wand type scanner that automatically feeds the pics through it that I saw on sale during the holidays, but the motivation is hard to find.

With so many boxes of family pics going back to WWII and beyond, I feel just as overwhelmed as those hoarders that they show on TV!

Just the sorting out process is scaring me!

But I know that the deed has to be done. One step at a time I guess...
 
DBH---My first trip to the Delta was in 1979. I was going with a BF who bought a 27ft Bayliner and stored it at the o-l-d Delta Resort. That was my introduction to the Delta and to weekend boating! I didn't stay in love with the BF, but I sure did fall hopelessly in love with boating on the Delta! Thus I eventually bought my first boat.

BAB---yes, one step at a time. Just grab a handful of photos and scan them in random order. Eventually you can begin sorting them into folders by time period or family member or whatever makes sense for you.
Another time, grab another handful of photos and repeat! Just do an hour at a time and focus on what you are accomplishing instead of what is ahead. Organizing them electronically is so much easier IMO.

My priority went to the oldest photos 'cause they were impossible to replace if damaged.......

Did you ever get a chance to hoist a Heininken with Hal Schell. I never had the opportunity although we conversed many time by email. Sure do miss that guy. Maybe us old timers are few and far between these days.

I was never on his boat, but we shared a wet one at a bar or two several times. And I too conversed via email often. I've appeared in an issue or two of Yachtsman Magazine in his column. Like many, I considered him a friend more then an acquaintance.

I credit him with opening my eyes to the political issues of water in this state and how they effect the Delta. I repost info about the Delta in honor of Hal Schell and his legacy!

Was the runabout an older Cobalt that was docked at Village West? My previous boat was on the same dock as a boat that had "dawdler" in the name and it hadn't been used for a long time judging by the dust on the boat around the time he was ill and later died. I always assumed it was one of his.
 
Yes, Hal's final "Dawdler's Dinghy" was a Cobalt that he kept at Village West. Prior to that, he had a Cordova and prior to that a Glastron.

He did have a boat in between the Cordova and the Cobalt, but only for a very short time. I believe it was a Formula or a Wellcraft. But due to it having a major engine failure a short time after he purchased it, he got rid of it, as-is.
 
The only boat of Hal'ls I saw was the large Delta Dawdler that was slipped at Tiki Lagoon for a number of years. Hope his ghost or spirit still is hanging around there. We miss him a bunch. Every time I hoist a Heiniken i
I think of him.....
 
It was actually berthed at Turner's Cut, but close enough. Both places are right next to each other.

That was his Golden Star, a Taiwan built boat. He purchased it from Larry Lister, who had his dealership on the Oakland Embarcadero. The dealership's location is now the place where you can purchase the VERY expensive Protector HBI boats.

Hal's previous "Delta Dawdler's" were a 30' Carver aft cabin (or "Cadaver" as he used to call them), that he purchased from Ed Thoreson with Richard's Yacht Center on B.I, and previous to that was a 26' (or so) Chris Craft/Owen's type wooden cruiser that he kept at Windmill Cove, and finally, a houseboat that he (mostly) lived on at the docks of Lost Isle.

And yeah, I'm sure his spirit is very happy spending time hanging around the Delta. "Dawdling" actually... ;)

Sometimes, when we are spending the night out on the hook, I'd swear I could hear reveille being played somewhere out in the distance.

Did you ever hang with Hal in the old days at Lost Isle. I was a bit of a late comer and the Isle was nothing but go fast boats, wet T-shirt contests and water cops hanging out waiting to get some one. I remember Hal talking about strange animals all over the place on that island, lots of mellow folks and no hassles with the authorities or county beaurocrats.

Yeah, I'm very grateful to say that I pounded down a few cold ones with Hal at L.I. He was really just another River Rat in the crowd back then, but he quickly became a rising star among the tule berms.

My Mom had an interesting chance meeting with him too. It's a long story, but the bottom line is that I took her there to show her the place and before I knew it, she tossed her drink at him! Thankfully, he never held that against me!, LOL, and I ended up becoming friends with him. Of course, I was never able to spend as much time with him as I would have liked to, but a few of the very special moments with him included a few Fourth of July's at Mandeville Tip, an afternoon with him and the Super Secret Ship Club (I might just get shot just for mentioning it!), a ride on Howard Arneson's jet boat, and of course, a few mugs of Heineken's on the Delta Dawdler.

I certainly miss him more than some of my own family members...

And the stories about the animals on the island were true. While enjoying one of their awesome steaks, various animals would come right up to you. Goats, chickens, guinea pigs, a donkey and even a monkey! As well as others. I think people brought them on to the island and released them to fend for themselves.
