This past Friday a young girl (ll yrs old) fell out of a boat by ordinary point on the Sassafras. I heard they recovered her yesterday (Sat), no life jacket. Many lives ruined in a split second. Don't know anything about the family but I'm sure they are still in shock.
Moral, be safe and take no chances.

Aren't life jackets required for 12 and under? Did she hit her head or something? Do we know how the boat was that she fell out of?

I know it doesn't bring her back...it's just hard to figure out how these things happen. I boat with my kids.

Very tragic.

There were many stories going around down there this weekend, it's hard to know what happened. From what I've read, 23 foot wakeboard style boat hit a wake from a tugboat. From what people were saying, she may have gone under the boat and possibly hit the prop.

I boat with my two young kids, stories like this keep me awake at night, and make me wonder if I've chosen the right pasttime.

This little girl was from my marina (Skipjack Cove). The mother was hysterical on the dock Friday when she went missing. It was very terrible to see.

I have a 12-year-old daughter and I can't imagine what the parents are going through.

My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Craig,

Do you know who she was or what the boat name is? We still have many friends at SJC and I'm hoping its not someone we are familiar with.

Mike, I did not know the family. The were new this year on one of the lifts on "D" dock. I was told they lived local.

OK, thanks. If they were new this year we wouldn't know the family. The article says they are from Earleville; that's up off the Bush River I believe. Terrible tragedy.

Earleville is very local, go up 213 to the light in Cecilton, turn left, and you're in Earlville. From what I read, father was driving boat, out with son and daughter.

Unfortunately, I know full well exactly what the family is going through and it makes me want to just sit in a corner and cry.

My guess would be bow riding with no life jacket.

Here's one from the South River on Sunday.

The only reason I'm bringing up this article is further down NRP says that PFD's only required for children under 7 in a boat under 21 feet. I too thought the age was 12 or 13.

The Maryland Natural Resources Police remind all citizens and visitors that attention to boating safety saves lives, and is of paramount importance when enjoying Maryland’s waterways. While it is recommended that everyone on board wear a personal floatation device while a vessel is underway, a child under 7 years of age must wear a life jacket while underway in a vessel that is less than 21 feet in length. In addition, children under 4 years of age and/or less than 50 pounds must have a life jacket equipped with a grab strap, inflatable headrest and crotch strap.
