A couple months ago there were several posts regarding thefts from boats slipped in marinias from theives who apparently came by boat. Any of you who weekend on your slipped boat worry about intruders, does your marina have a watchman, have any of you had problems with folks wandering around your marina at night up to no good. I hope to be doing a bit more of that in the near future and was wondering if it was a problem, even a small one.

Yes, it can be. But 99% of the burglaries take place during the week when no one is around the dock. In marinas, boaters look out for one another and others' boats. Appreciate your "nosey" berthmate! He might save you some money.

As far as your personal safety, I think you are safer on your boat at a dock then you are in an urban area in your car. You are more in danger of falling in the water then from getting mugged. IMHO

Our marina (Oxbow) is very safe and we seldom have un-invited people roaming around, but even so, about 6 months a dingy riding thief made off with lots of fishing gear and other saleable stuff from 5-6 boats. There seems to be a pretty good idea who did it - a known non-friend of most of the people who got hit. I do think about intruders and am pretty well prepaired if one should choose my boat. I have several very loud alarms and an air horn in my cabin, and if they fail, my S&W is the last resort, and will probably deter or stop just about anyone! I have a CCW, but I beleive you are allowed to have a weapon on board for protection, as it is considered your home - anyone know for sure in CA?
 
I am also interested in knowing what the California law says about guns on the boat.
 
I'm not sure what the state law is, but the CG has no problem. Just identify the arms immediately upon being boarded. They will ask you to remove the clip and make sure the chamber is empty and everything is in plain view until they leave.
 
It is my understanding that if your boat has a couple of amenities such as berths, bathroom and galley, it qualifies for a second residence and a concealed weapon on board is legal. I could be wrong about this but this is what I heard. I always have one on board. I think I was really asking if marinas by in large offer security in any manneer.

My marina owner lives at the marina; he also has renters in the house next door. Lots of eyes around to keep people and things safe on Piper Slu!
 
We keep ours at a boat yard. They are there on weekdays, 7 to 5 pm.
Now that it is summer, there are a lot of boaters there on weekends.
We did have 2 live aboards and 1 part time live aboard. We now have
only 1 full time live aboard and 1 part time live aboard.
 
Oxbow has the office manager in a house next to the office, and most of the staff as live-aboards. As well, there are live-aboards on most sheds. Don't know the count, but I suspect there are 30 or so full timers, and they are one of the best defenses. We do not have hired security guards, but the sherrif drives through regulary, mostly because there are 50 or so homes in the marina. I think another part of our lack of crime is because we have no "public" draw like a bar or food, so only the marina people tend to be around.
