Anyone familiar with Canal runniing by Ketchum Ave

I need to bring boat to Steve's marine to swap out my prop. Going in at high tide. They say it is fine in there. Anyone have any local knowledge with this canal? I was told stay right.

It's the canal in Amityville opposite North Channel Buoy Red 22.

go slow and read your depth sounder. Local knowledge may be local but it is rarely knowledge.
 
Hi Dave,

It has been a few years, but I remember you had to stay near the east side. There are local buoys. When you get near Steve's it gets pretty narrow, again stay on the east side. It's all mud and silt in there, good luck. The good part is after you're harrowing skinny water ride, Toomey's is right next door for a shot and a beer. If you need a hand let me know.

Stay close to the houses and canals on the east side of the cove. Once you get into the canal stay to the right side of center and youll be fine. Leaving, also go the way you came (left side of center) till you get past the yacht club
 
I keep my boats up that canal. Boat Crazy hit it on the head, its well marked, stay in the channel to the right closer to the houses and the small marina's on east side, at high tide you will be fine... It does get a bit narrow when you get up to Steve's but his travel lift well is right there.

That's a pretty wide canal. I go in there all of the time. Just north of Steve's is Toomey's Tavern. If you are coming from Anchorage, just past the Amity cut drift north. You'll see a channel that runs along the coastline that starts at about the Unqua Yacht club and ends just past the Narrasketuck Yacht club (little sailboats). That will put you right into the main channel. Stay centered and bear left. Just past the point where the canal splits right (right takes you to Delmarine) you will see Steve's Marine on the right side of the main channel.
 
I go in and out of there a lot. The club my kids sail out of (Narrasketuck) is up in there.
As SteveR said, coming west from Lindenhurst, the buoy just past Amityville Cut, look and turn right. You'll see the channel leading up in to that canal marked well by buoys. Stay between them and you shouldn't have any problems. There is a bit of a distance between the east west channel and the ones marking the entry to the canal, but SteveR's directions are solid.
Steve's is on the west side of Ketchum Avenue.
I see some pretty big boats go in and out of there all the time.
If you are a little unsure about the run from the east west channel to the buoys leading up in to that canal, maybe you can sit it out for a few minutes and follow someone in.

Yes, that's the one I mean. It runs east and west between the Robert Moses and the Massapequa/Amityville border on the north side of the bay. Parallel to the State boat Channel.
I'm out of town right now and don't have access to a chart, but you'll pass a buoy on your right as you go by Unqua Yacht club. Look immediately to your right and you will see a channel marked off with buoys heading in to that canal a couple of hundred feet away. Just turn towards that channel and you will be good. The chart is pretty accurate over there from what I remember.
Lot's of big boats go in and out of there. You should be fine.
 
Everyone nailed it Dave. I keep my cruisers '40 boat at Steve's Marine in the offseason and they service it during the season.

Steve is a terrific guy. Terry manages that yard for him and is super nice/ helpful. Marcel is the boatyard guy. Tell them I say hi!

Be careful of the very ends of the boat lift tracks if you are getting hauled out. They are not well protected and always make me a little nervous, but they will walk you in. Good luck.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone call it the north channel except you ;) Every person familiar with the bay I've known since I was a kid calls it the east west channel!
 
Ok, I had to go to the charts and only reference I see is off Hecksher, but it's still the same channel.
So maybe I am wrong, I will now call it the East-West Channel! But East of bridge, i think it's North Channel!

Having not been up that way before and having a new boat with the pods hanging off the bottom I'd be a little apprehensive too.
When are you heading over there. I'll be back in town Sunday, and if it is after that and I'm available I would be happy to make the trip with you if you are a little unsure.
 
I am down at boat. Tide is high but bay is whitecaps, foggy and wind is strong.
Not worth the venture over in this.
I am gonna wait.

Made it in and got there.
Changed prop.
Lowest was 2.9 under boat.
Was all good
2.9 still makes me nervous as crap!
 
I can understand why you were nervous! Congrats on getting in. Fixed and good to go?
