Attachment screws for back rest in dinette??

Carver 30' Aft Cabin 1994

I have new curtains, re-carpeted the interior, bridge enclosure is being installed, new carpet exterior. Now for the next project (will not say last) The dinette has a back rest that I want to have reupholstered. The shop wants so much money to do it I cannot afford to have this done. So it will be a do it yourself project. The problem is I cannot find the attachment screws for the back rest. Once I can get it out I can then review my options. Thanks for your help
 
Not saying this is the case on you vessel but on my Silverton 37C some unbelievable velcro was used. It was so difficult to remove I challenged the manufacturer when they told me velcro. It was velcro !
I would contact Carver's customer service for this info.
 
Bob, you are correct Carver does use Velcro to hold stuff together. If they hold this on with Velcro I would be surprised. We will be at the boat this weekend so I will look to see if velcro is a possibility.

You're going to have to actually try & pry off. Maybe in an area that's not too visible. While prying, listen for that familiar sound of velcro separating.
 
PJ,

Look between the pleats of the backrest for screws...sometimes they'll hide scres in there...look for small holes and dig around inside for phillips screw heads
 
I hope for your sake the screws are in the pleats. On old "5" and "6" series boats they used to sew the upholstery onto the damn backrests AFTER they screwed them into place. I have no idea how they ever accomplished that!!!

When I redid my old Carver years ago, I simply made elongated holes like you see on shelves, put the screws part way into the wall, and slipped the backrests over them and slid them down into place. That was a much better solution on the older models!!!
 
Thanks all, here are my attack steps of for the problem.
Step 1, I will take a pry bar to get in the back of the back rest pry gently and listen for the un mistakable sound of Velcro or wood splintering.
Step 2, if it is wood splintering, I have a metal detector that has a 1/2" probe. I will run down the seam and see if we can find the screws.
Step 3 call the local canvas shop and have them just do it.
I have asked the canvas shop that quoted the reupholstering how it comes off and he did not have a clue. He said each job is different, and they do not know until they start the job and it is never easy on the older boats.
 
GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!! Kenny you were correct the screws were in the Pleat. I have worked on this every time we would come to the boat and could not find out how this thing was attached. The metal detector pointed to every one of the screws in the pleat. Now let the wife pick the fabric and get it done

Just have her make it look GOOD...LOL. I'm glad I was able to help. Just redid my interior this fall...not back in the boat yet, as it's like -20 here (really it's about 20), but it should look sweet when it's back in...did the curtains too.
 
Kenny I now can undestand cold!!! Heat went out on the boat only one unit working. the boat is chilly. BRRRRRRRRRRR
