When approaching a slip in a powerboat with an outboard engine on a transom bracket that requires docking with the stern in moored against the dock with poles and lines attached to the bow...what is the preferred or correct method?

As tide as the primary concern, should you approach bow against the tide, just past the slip, slide into neutral, begin reversing slowly and allow the current to swing the bow around as you back into the slip or should you approach with the tide and use the reverse on the engine as the primary method to bring the bow around and back into the slip?
